Upgrading my Alienware Aurora R3

Hi,

I bought my R3 back in 2011. I would really like to start upgrading it.

At the moment I have a:

-Alienware R3 motherboard

- Intel (R) Core(TM) i5-2300 CPU @ 2.80 GHZ, 4 cores

- Nvidia GTX 480

- RAM 6GB

I am hoping to get the :

6GB XFX Radeon HD 7990, 6000MHz GDDR5, 28nm, GPU 950MHz, Boost 1000MHz, 4096 Cores,

16 gb (2x8gb) Corsair RAM

Intel Core i7 3770K,1155, Ivy Bridge, Quad Core, 3.5GHz, 5 GT/s DMI, 650MHz GPU, 8MB Smart Cache, 35x Ratio, 77W,Retail

Will my computer be able to handle them?

If I wanted the latest and best graphics cards what will I have to do?

Can I, or can't I?

Be a massive bummer if I can't. Probably end up selling my pc If I couldn't.

Hi Spamuel,

You can install any of the graphics cards mentioned in my post above.  These are the graphic cards which are tested on the computer.

If you are trying to install XFX Radeon HD 7990 Triple D Video Card - 6GB GDDR5, you need to have 750W power supply.

Awaiting your response!

Hi Rajesh,  Why can't Dell test some of the newer GPUs on the R3?

Because customer satisfaction isn't priority 1 at Dell.

Hi Rajesh,  Why can't Dell test some of the newer GPUs on the R3?

Aurora R3 was the first Aurora with UEFI BIOS and it's implementation is apparently a little weird.

Compiling data from a few threads on the subject, mostly any AMD card should work on Win7-64, as long as:

1. Aurora's BIOS is in Legacy mode.

2. You have the 875w PowerSupply and that can handle the new card power-wise

3. The card is flashed with a Legacy or non-Hybrid VideoBIOS or vBIOS.

Ha just found out the same thing... It's a <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU> science experiment figuring out how to make it work. So I will buy a new custom pc or better yet ps4 here I come. Ps4 here I come same price as the r9 290 I just got.

I installed a Nvidia GTX 680 graphics card in my Aurora R3 and it works just fine, but as far as I'm aware, I can't upgrade it any more than that because anything newer is not supported

SPAMUEL WROTE THE FOLLOWING POST AT 16 OCT 2013 11:44 AM:

Spam, You are lucky your r3 has not yet started with the parts wearing out. Freezing screen many of us Alienware people are very ticked right now as we have 3k paper weight, I would highly recommend you to wait on any up-grades as dell is not standing behind these top dollar computers....

I suggest you contact Dell's CEO if you have been left with a dead PC. It was the only way I had my out of warranty R3 repaired. Don't know if you are in the States or the UK?

Thanks - If I had the email I would send a very nice package to him or her I sent an email last night with post from apx 200 hundred people all with the same problem I am still under warranty and I said the list of complaints convinced me that the band-aide fixes is not repairing the problem  I also sent the printout of my repairs and told them I wanted a new pc and not an R3 and with all the up-grades mine has on it see today what happens but if you have away to get that email please send it to me.

Rajesh,

I am also upgrading my Alienware Aurora R3 board and wondering if a nivida gtx 750 video card will work on this machine.

I did some research on the Nvidia GTX 980, and it uses the same 2x pin power connectors, and uses less electricity than my current Nvidia GTX 680. So I'm thinking it should be perfect for my system, and eventually I will save up for another one to put them in SLI together.

Listen....Sadly DELL figured out that most Graphic card run out after 2-4 years in order to keep up with new games. So they wrote the bios  to match. Meaning Need upgrade GU = Computer upgrade. I know it is a sad way but it's about $$$$. So plan on investing 1-4 K every 4-6 years.

Dell doe have a great product so really a non issue. That is technology
