X51 Memory restricted to max 8 GB for SandyBridge processors ?

Hi,

A table in post http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/alienware/f/3746/t/19486321.aspx indicates that the max memory that can be installed on X51 with SandyBridge processors (i7 2600) is 8 GB.  Only systems with IvyBridge can be upgraded to 16 GB.

Can anyone confirm this limitation ?

The i7 2600 has not such restriction (Max memory indicated on Intel web-site is 32 GB) so wondering why it's so. I'm assuming that same H61 chipset is used with both IvyBridge & SandyBridge configs, so it should not be limiting the max memory either.

Thanks ..

Hi Incompressible,

Yes, the information provided in the post is correct. Alienware X51 supports a maximum of 8 GB with SandyBridge processor and 16 GB with IvyBridge processor.

You can put a ivy bridge in.  I am running a i5 3570k in mine with no problems.

I think you can run 16gb on the sandy though.  I remember when the x51 first came out someone tossed 16 gb in and it worked.

But why the restriction if as "Incompressible" says, the i7-2600 can handle more according to Intel?

And a dumb question, can an X51 with a Sandy Bridge CPU be replaced with an Ivy Bridge CPU and if so would that then allow the upgrade to 16GB?
