X51-R3, graphics card upgrade

I have an x51 r3 with a i7 6700 16gb of ram and a gtx 960. I'm planning on upgrading it to a 1060 to further my gaming needs. how can I make sure it is compatible with my system before I buy it and what do I do to prep my computer the switch out?  besides of course just taking out the old one and replacing it with the new

Hi,

It is not officially validated, but it should work. You just need to take into consideration the Graphics Card Dimensions: the length should be 9.5'' or less.

Let me know if you need something else!

the 1060  reference(founders version)  would be best for the X51 as it  has  a blower style fan and exhausts out the rear like the stock video card... mine came with a 970 .. I currently have  a 1070  in mine and its a leap above....  apparently the 1080 is actually same size aswell so... something to take in consideration.. assuming you go the 330 watt psu   .

otherwise if you get one with dual fans on it that exhaust into the case you might find yourself overheating if the sidepanel is on :*(

I  have recently upgraded my X51 R3 with the 1060, single fan and it works fine. My CPU is an i3-6100, and GPU temps idle are around 55, and load around 77. Granted I am no super gamer, but PC has passed several different GPU stress tests in a row.

I am not sure if yours comes with an HDD or an SSD, you can switch the HDD out to regain a few watts, and should lower temperatures as well. I have found these PC's are very user friendly when it comes to upgrading them, and so far I have been able to simply plug and play all my upgrades, only issue, needing a screw to install a Samsung 950 NVME PCIE M.2 512 GB. You can find that type of stuff and any electronic recycle facility for nothing. I hope that helps.

I just finished an install of a GTX 1060 on an Alienware X51 R3. I go over the issues you may encounter and show you how to do it.
