15 R3, GPU Bus interface, x8 internal 1070 GTX, x4 for external 1660 GTX?
Hi all,
I noticed that the bus interface on the Alienware 15 R3 that the Laptop GPU Bus interface only @ x3 internal gpu 1070 GTX.
I brought the external graphics amplifier and installed an external GPU 1660 GTX but its only running @x4 not @ x16
I always thought my system had a graphics problem from day one, but could never pinpoint the problem, till now. I have to say i'm very frustrated that both the 2 GPU are only running at the old AGP slots speeds of x4 and x8.
Have to say disappointed with the amplifier if its only going to let me run the card @x4 what was the point of spending the money to buy it and the card if the bus interface is so now.
I Overclocked my Alienware 15 R1 from 2014 from 2.5Ghz to 3.7Ghz on all 4 cores.
If my laptop is cold and my room is at 59 degrees F then I can push it to 4.1Ghz but then it surprisingly draws up to 35watts of power under load. This CPU can handle its stuff well since this is the first generation BGA cpus Alienware designed.
Dont worry about my temps, they’re in a 75C range under a 4 core stress load.

Yeah it's good to have my system running right now, and it also runs cooler while running games it was 60c to 68c last night playing Doom Eternal and was running very smooth.
I installed Intel Processor Identification Utility Windows Version I noticed that they cpu is at 3.46 GHz and now has access to 6mb L3 memory cache, where it has no access to it without the turbo boost installed and enabled.

Also I installed Intel Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 Application on top of the 2.6 version I installed before it was the only way i could install 3.0 as i could not install 3.0 from the other link page on 2.6.

Yeah it is real good, also my system has been 10 c lower in heat since I have done the mods.
I have a question but, is the AGA built on PCIe bifurcation. If the AGA port and hardware was built on PCIe bifurcation this would explain why it can only be PCIe x4 because they have got usb ports and such in the AGA case.
PCIe bifurcation supported hardware can only have a x16 or x4x4x4x4 ( "you can get cards to split single PCIe x16 to x8x8")
If this is the case, the external AGA would be set to x4x4x4x4 in the uefi/ bios, am I right?. It is just that we can not access this function, not home users anyway, but only Dell developers.
Right, only dell developers can have access to the PCIe interface speed.
