@willmgf Firstly, if you have Support Assist installed try uninstalling it to see if it fixes your fan issue. There have been many reports recently of this program messing with the fan control on the older systems.
Other than the motherboard, the only other board I can see is this USB I/O board but there isn't much on it.
Does your Alienware 15 R3 display a message when AWCC software is opened? Are the AWCC's HOME, FX and FUSION tabs missing or not working?
The Dell AWCC application is not not stand-alone. There is discussion about AWCC's continued compatibility with Windows Updates. The general advice is, if your version of AWCC works, do not update. Can your Alienware 15 R3 operating system be restored to when AWCC's HOME, FX and FUSION tabs were working? System Restore in Windows 10 | Dell US

There are a few chips on the back of the board that could be the AlienFX chip but I couldn't be sure.

The Dell application Alienware Command Center for Notebooks version 4.8.23.0 has a bug with old systems such as the Alienware 15 R3. There is no AWCC Master input/output board.
