17 R4, firmwaretpm.exe stopped working

Shipped April 2018. Warranty expired in February 2021. Windows 10 20h2, all updates current. I've had this error 10 times. it started on 11/19. In the few days prior to this there were no unusual updates, just the regular defender updates. There is no "firmwaretpm.exe" file to be found on my machine. however, device manager reports that trusted platform manager 2.0 is working properly, and the driver version is 10.0.19041.746. I DO NOT wish to reset it in bios unless someone knows 100% that it will be fixed without losing anything on my machine.

My client's computer XPS 8900 Windows 10 22H2 shows "Firmwaretpm.exe stopped working" in the Reliability Monitor since early November. It seemed to coincide with the dropping of wi-fi using Dell Wireless 1560 adapter. I have since started using a Linksys WUSB6300 USB wi-fi adapter and all is now functioning well.

I have gotten the same problem too.

It seems like malware activity, but not limited to. The most suspicious thing is the application path that is in a temporary folder; "Faulting Application Path: C:\Windows\TEMP\invA727_tmp\FirmwareTPM\FirmwareTPM.exe." I could not locate it. It seems like already removed it.

I'm uncomfortable when looking at the reliability history.

Hi alienware17r4:

Senior forum member and TechExpert RoHe posted on 11-Jan-2023 in Reliability Monitor Logging FirmwareTPM.exe APPCRASHs Since 19-Nov-2022 that "Dell is aware of these FirmwareTPM.exe errors...".

It would be helpful if a Dell employee could confirm this and let us know if Dell is planning to release another silent "Over the Air" (OTA) update for SupportAssist and Dell Update to fix this FirmwareTPM.exe error, similar to the OTA update I mentioned <above> for the UsbUpdate.exe error that occurred back in May/June of 2022.

Not ready to pronounce this fixed yet but.... it has gone more than the 72 hours between errors now. IF it is indeed fixed the culprit looks like WINDOWS STORE!! I had the store set to auto updates. Windows store got updated since the last error. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi alienware17r4:

It's always possible that Dell silently pushed out a silent "Over the Air" (OTA) update in the past few days to fix this problem, but I can't see any connection between my FirmwareTPM.exe errors and my background Microsoft Store updates on my Inspiron 5584.

My Dell SupportAssist and Dell TechHub services have been disabled at Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services since early January 2023 to prevent my SupportAssist v3.13.0 from launching automatically at boot-up ...

Win 10 Pro v22H2 Services All Dell Services Three SA Services Disabled 22 Dec 2022.png

... and since then I've only had one FirmwareTPM.exe error on 13-Jan-2023, which happens to be the one day that I manually restarted those services and launched SupportAssist from my Start menu. If the Microsoft Store had updated one of my UWP apps on 13-Jan-2023 it would have been logged in my Reliability Monitor under "Informational Events" (e.g., 9WZDNCRFJBH4-Microsoft.Windows.Photos - Successful Windows Update).

The app library of my Microsoft Store shows that at least 11 UWP apps have been automatically updated on my system since early January 2023 (including My Dell v2.1.8.0 on 05-Jan-2023 as shown below) and no FirmwareTPM.exe errors were logged on any of those dates.

I'm talking about an update to the microsoft store app itself. All my store updateable apps have been updating all along. The error does not appear to cause any harm. we'll see.

nope, not fixed. it did go 4 days instead of 3 since the store app update. it's been like clockwork since it started, every 3 days at 6:34 am. This has to originating on my computer, but I cant find any task triggers that fit it.

Dell Support told me they are Aware of this issue.  However no timeline of the fix.  Arg!

Dell Inspiron 3668, expired in 2019.  I am stuggling to hold an internet connection.  I ran across the reliability report and do see the same firmwaretpm.exe stopped working several times.  I also upgraded (?) and am renting a Cox Gateway modem.  Have had nothing but problems on my Dell.  They are sending someone out.  Better not cost me Dell!  Is it time to switch over to Apple?  Tired of nothing by  Google/Windows working.

After three months of this error every 3 days there may be a change... should have got the error on 2/11, but didn't. A new error has appeared. It's "background task host stopped working" The new error is on a 24 hour schedule instead of 72 hours. Every day at 1:21pm. This time the offending program is clear: DellInc.DellSupportAssistforPCs_3.13.7.0_x64__htrsf667h5kn2

Hi alienware17R4:

I've also noticed that I haven't had a FirmwareTPM.exe crash since 10-Feb-2023, but I'm not quite ready to declare this problem is solved on my Inspiron 5584. We've been told that Dell is aware of these errors and is working on a fix, and it would be helpful if someone from Dell could provide a status update in this thread to let us know if they've actually resolved the problem [and if this will be implemented as a "silent" over-the-air (OTA) fix or if we need to install a software update].

What version of SupportAssist is currently listed on your machine at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features? I've been seeing some odd behavior with the SupportAssist v3.13.2.14 that was installed on my Inspiron 5584 on 08-Feb-2023 (see my 10-Feb-2023 topic Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update Rolled Back to v5.5.4.16189 in the SupportAssist for PCs board), and for some reason Dell always seems to push out upcoming SupportAssist updates to Alienware owners for beta testing weeks before they go into wide release.

The last firmware error I experienced was on 2/9. We shall see...

I've yet to see the "background host..." error
