17 R4, no boot with 3200MHz 32GB?

Alienware 17 R4

Alienware 17 R4

I attempted to upgrade my ram from 2x8 (16 total) to 2x16 (32 total).  Every time I try to reboot, it will not complete a windows boot.

Memory purchased is Crucial 2x16 DDR4 3200 SODIMM (I did a lot of research and it seemed this was the most compatible.   I checked my computers max memory and it looks to be 32gig (I will try to attach pic of results).

First install: Computer booted to start and showed Bios warning "The amount of system memory has change.  If you did not change your memory..  To resolve this issue, try to reseat the memory".  Since I had changed the amount, I told it to continue.   It went as far as to load the windows log screen but froze there.   I waited a while then powered down and tried again.   I repeated this about 3 times and each time the booted a little less in distance until it simply didn't move past black screen at start (only new it was on because of backlights).

I put old memory back in and did more research.   Started testing.

I put one of old and one of new sticks in to test compatibility.  It booted fine with old 8 and new 16 for a total of 24 (specs showed all 24 in task manager.

I read suggestions on clearing the CMOS by removing all power from computer, unplugging battery, putting both new sticks in again, press and hold power for 15 seconds and then restart everything.   Still nothing but black screen with backlights.

I sure would like to have some other ideas if anyone has them.  I did wait over 5 minutes to see if it would ever boot and it didn't.

It currently has one old and one new for a total of 24 now (so I assume this means the new crucial sticks are compatible or it wouldn't be working with the one 16kb.

Hi @triciagalexnder welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

Support for Alienware 17 R4 Memory does not include 3200 MHz speed.

Crucial System Advisor database does not include include 3200 MHz speed and recommends Crucial 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4 2400 MHz SODIMM. Alienware 17 R4 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com. Crucial will accept return of their 3200 MHz RAM Memory so that the 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) 2400 MHz can be purchased.

oh man, I thought I had covered all the details.  Thank you so much.  I know just enough about all of this to be dangerous... LOL.   Didn't even notice I got 3200.    I will make that change now.  Thanks so much!
