Avamar 6.1 and Client Builds

Hello,

Under that strange subject, I am asking myself how to assign a special build to a client in my lab.

Let me explain: I did a new build where i specified that it was not allowed to backup, restore and browse like in this print screen.

I would like to assign it to my servers.

Anyone an idea?

Hey Olivier,

These settings should be leveraged when you deploy this particular client using a particular dataset. Therefore, when you specify 'Windows VSS' in your dataset, and you deploy this client version, 6.1.102, on your Windows guest, you will see these settings then reflected.

Thanks,

Hello Ed,

Not sure I understand

So, if I just made a new Windows VSS build that says 'No on demand backup and restore' and just set VSS in my dataset, it's ok? admins would not be allowed to restore from the client?

But what if I mix Windows VSS and File System? I believe I will have to do the same for the File Sytem plug in. No?

Maybe stupid but I install my agents via the http://avamaserver and clicking on Documents and Download.

Sorry, newbie question

OK,

So, I created a group with 3 servers in it, assigned a dataset (like in the print screen), assigned a schedule and a retention.

But, when I look at the client details I see this:

Is this normal? Maybe from there my problem?

Hey Olivier,

See responses below:

That's correct.

Admins would not be allowed to restore from the client?

I believe Windows adminstrator would not be allowed to restore from the client. Since it was an Adminstrative setting on Avamar.

But what if I mix Windows VSS and File System? I believe I will have to do the same for the File Sytem plug in. No?

That is also correct, it is the same methodology for all plugins.

You're correct you should see the dataset '/Windows/Servers/Win....'

Untitled.png

This is where I like to make sure the right group has the right dataset. Try editing from there to select the dataset you want to use.

You're both right, actually.

olivier.cesar, what you're looking at is the client properties dialog. Clients can be assigned an individual dataset that overrides the group dataset. This override will not be used unless the "Override Group Dataset" checkbox is checked. By default, the group dataset will be used unless that checkbox is checked.

mikuszed, your screenshot is of the policy window and you are on the Groups tab so you are seeing the policy for the group. If you change to the Clients tab and select the client, you will likely see that the clients have the Default Dataset assigned on that tab. As before, the group dataset will be used unless the override option is in use.

Still, I don't know how to accomplish what I would like to do: No on demand backup and restore from the servers.

If you don't want to see the agent available, install it without the client interface:

mikuszed, That's a solution but then, you do not have the console available.

I did something as a test and it looks like it is working.

  • In the Manage All Agents & Plug-ins, disabled the 6.1.102

capture01.PNG.png

  • Create a new build and disable restore, browse and client backup.
  • Restart the agent on one of my test server
  • Try an On-demand backup -> not working :-)
  • Open angent log and this is what I could find

Well done, Olivier. This, I believe is the expected behavior.
