Avamar SQL Agent WMI Issue

Ran into an interesting issue today. I installed a SQL Agent (after installing the FS backup agent and activating) and went to perform a backup using a generic SQL group. The backup errored out immediately with a status 10007 and the following error:

avsql Error <9072>: sqlconnectimpl_smo::get_installed_instance_list Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.SmoException: SQL Server WMI provider is not available on DBSERVER. ---> System.Management.ManagementException: Invalid namespace

Didn't find a lot on EMC support so I turned to google and weeded through a bunch of articles. It turns out the WMI provider was corrupted and needed to be rebuilt.

Once I did that, voila, the databases were browseable from Backup and Restore and backups worked.

Incidentally, this was Avamar 6.1 fwiw.
