Avamar VSS BAckup Windows 2008

Hello!

We backup Windows 2008 Servers with Avamar VSS Plugin and we see that on the Fileserver the hole Data backuped 2 times.

Then we look in the log files and we see, that volume which Windows Quota, was also taken to the backup with avamar, but we create now an call to fix this issue.

Because, if i create a Systemstate with Windows Backup, only teh System disk will be backed up.

Hey you have the same call?

We are in same pain, and EMC support told me it's all because of FSRM which controls quota and file screening (blocking filter)

I tried to stop FSRM service then start VSS backup, it only backup C: drive and took only 24 minutes... used to be 11 hours.

Funny thing is, even if you backup all drives in VSS plugin, it should be the same 2 hours as file system plugin does, right?

How come it took 11 hours to backup same thing?

Now we have 2 choices:

1. I'm trying to find out how to start backup on client using avtar or avvss, then I'll use a batch file to stop FSRM first, then start VSS backup, then start FSRM service back online.

2. The other way, we are waiting for EMC to provide a fix, to ignore FSRM enabled drives. I don't think we need to backup the whole drive, only because FSRM is moniting the quota and file screening of it?

Please do let me know your progress, thanks,

I have done the first way myself, becaus the Support told me that this is an normal, and the problem is a microsoft problem, but with the Microsoft Backup it works normally.

The support don't give me the second choice , so i hope that mor e customers have the same problem and the will fix teh problem.

I know this is almost a year old but has anyone had any relief with this? We just found it on our 2k8 nodes with FSRM on Avamar 6.0.1-65. And with VSS on some taking about 12+ hours on a 1TB system.

Thanks,

Al

Albert,

Lucky you, I've got it fixed after push EMC support a lot.

I'm using 5.0.3, will upgrade to 6.1 in next couple months.

They bring up a patch for this, so with a specific patched version, Avamar would ignore FSRM enabled partitions in VSS backup. Log a ticket to EMC to get that.

But, while they were building that patch, I found out the root cause and a better solution: Anti-Virus.

Added avtar.exe and avvss.exe to PROCESS exclusive list, then my backup boosted to 2 hours from 20 hours (1TB data too).

So actually McAfee is the bloody trouble maker.

Remember, process list, not file exclusive list.

For McAfee, you have to change the mode from All processes, to Low High risk processes mode.

Then add the avamar exe files to low risk list.

I guess, when Avamar creats VSS shadow, McAfee scan it, then Avamar read the shadow to do backup, MA scan it again...

Hope it helps,

Steve Li
