Cache files

Hello Team

We have been facing a problem in our environment that on daily basis P Cache and F Cache files are growing and as this are related to deduplication we cant delete the files as it will be a full backup .. Default Avamar is installed on C $ and my windows team were facing a problem as the server performance will degrade if this files are growing with the size.

Can I get any solution to keep this size not to grow or else anyother option .

Regards

Srini

Hello,

Please go through following discussion, you will get to know how to decide cache file size and how to change it.

Hello,

The size of the cache files is going to be depend on either :

  • Number of files to be backed up for the f_cache or the f_cache2
  • Size of the databases being backed up for p_cache

We would expect the f_cache to use approx 1Gb for every 10 million files being backed up, the f_cache2 (used if sending backups to DataDomain with client version 7.0 and higher) may be significantly bigger.

For 100Gb of database backup we would expect to use approx 100Mb of p_cache.

For further information on the potential size of caches and how to best tune them please see page 56 of the EMC Avamar 6.0 Operational Best Practices, if the backups are being sent to DataDomain, please see chapter 7 of the EMC Avamar 7.0 Operational Best Practices.

If you are sending the file system backups to DataDomain the solution:  Mitigating the potential impact of the size of the paging file cache will give you some tips on how to work around large cache files.

Finally to answer your question, if you want to move the caches to another drive you can follow these steps:

  1. Create a new folder where you want to store the cache files.
  2. Copy the existing cache files from /usr/local/avamar/var/ or C:\program files\avs\var\ to the new folder created in step 1.
  3. Create a new file in the client var directory called "avtar.cmd".  If the file already exists, edit it.
  4. Specify the new "cachedir" location as an option in the "avtar.cmd" flagfile for example, if you have a create D:\avamarcache for the file cache you should have an entry like this in C:\program files\avs\var\avtar.cmd:               -cachedir=D:\avamarcache
  5. Run a backup
  6. After confirming that the new cache directory was used correctly the copy of the client caches from the original Avamar var directory can be removed.

Hope that helps
