DR Solution for Avamar
Hello Friends,
I have Avamar and its backend have data domain for capacity , and wanted to create a DR solution , can some one help me to guide me or refer some docs in this subject .

So to answer your questions:
1. how replication will be establish ?
To get detailed instructions on each of the steps above, see Chapter 10 of the Avamar Administration guide.
2. Does Replication need to set both Avamar to Avamar and Data domain to Data Domain ?
Replication must be like for like, if you are running a gryphon model at the source site, you must run a gryphon model at the destination site.
3. What best practice we need to use if we are setting up replication ?
This is kind of difficult to answer, since no one but yourself is familiar with your organizational needs. I would tell you that, when configuring a DR strategy, three questions should be answered
Having the answers to #3 will be the best way to determine what needs to be replicated, how often it should replicated, etc. Remember, when configuring a DR solution, never try to boil an ocean. Take small steps, the hardest step you have already taken, identifying a need to replicate.

HI,
Could you please expand on what you mean by creating a DR solution? Avamar does backup its catalog to the DD, if you are running in a gryphon model.
Are you referring to a smoking hole scenario? A role back scenario?

I am having a source site where I am having Avamar in front end as well as Data Domain connected at the Backend of Aavamar . Now we need to implement a DR , have same setup at target side . so Now wanted to know
1. how replication will be establish ?
2. Does Replication need to set both Avamar to Avamar and Data domain to Data Domain ?
3. What best practice we need to use if we are setting up replication ?
Since I have not implemented DR previously so looking for a Solution which can be implement .

Configure replication through the Avamar Administrator GUI. Assuming the software is set up on both source and target, log into the source system, create a new replication destination, then configure a replication job.
Each replication job includes the system data required for a disaster recovery so as long as you're running replication regularly, the configuration data from the source system should be fully protected. Naturally you will need to ensure that your replication jobs are configured to replicate any user backup data you wish to preserve in the event of a disaster.

Many thanks to you ., really your answer was very much helpful .
for your point 3
what form the list above must recovered in
so for this wanted to know what strategy we need to use for this purpose ?

Many thanks Millb65 and others for your priceless response so far and we the newbies to this technology look upto you as a role model.
Please I have a customer with similar configuration at both production and DR Site (Avamar/Data Domain configuration).Networker and Avamar are used for backup in the production site with data domain as target for both.So there is Networker and Avamar Mtree on data domain.
Replication was setup on the data domain for Avamar Mtree and not on the Avamar Administrator while Networker Clone Control replication was setup for networker backup data though data domain does the replication but networker is aware of it.
Networker bootstrap/backup metadata is
We want to implement DR for Avamar backup data for the customer now but realise the avamar backup metadata is not replicated to DR because it is stored on the Avamar single node grid. How do we redesign the current setup to achieve this.
How do we setup replication for the avamar metadata from production to DR so in addition to the current setup where the avamar backup data replication is setup on the data domain by MTREE replication.

The customer needs to disable DD native replication for their Avamar MTree and configure replication through the Avamar Administrator GUI. Using DD native replication for Avamar MTrees is not supported except under very specific circumstances (isolated recovery solution and DD system replacement are the two I can think of off the top of my head).
The main problem with trying to use DD native replication for Avamar MTrees is that the DD snapshots on the source Data Domain that correspond with Avamar's checkpoints will be replicated to the target Data Domain and never cleaned up.
There needs to be an Avamar system on the DR site to act as a target for the Avamar portion of the replication. It will have its own MTree. The Avamar replicator will use DD Managed File Replication to ensure the data is replicated from the source DD to the target DD (similar to NetWorker CCR).
The MTree from the previous MTree replication context should be deleted since it may be consuming significant capacity.

Many thansk for your mentoral response and so greatful
-Already the Avamar MTree is about 150Tib being replicated with DDR MTree replication at the moment.EMC Professional Service Team Implementation engineer and Solution Architect did this implementation initially.
-With regards to the DD snapshots on the source data domain which corresponds to the Avamar Checkpoint and automatically replicated.Does it get cleaned up on the source and destination DDR or only on the source. Is there any way to set retention for the snapshots and does it likely consume more space if otherwise on the source and target DDR
-We have confirm that the customer had same single node Avamar System in the DR similar to production already which was even there and in the project order but some where some some there was an ommission or mixup.
What is the implication of disabling the DDR MTree replication for the Avamar MTree on the already avamar backup data and configure replication through the Avamar Administrator GUI.Would they be data loss or could the already backup data on the avamar be restored if need be so that we analyse the ups and downs of this anticipated change which is best practice

-What is the implication of deleting the Avamar MTree on dta loss and restore
-How long could it take the anticipated configuration of replication through the Avamar Administrator GUI take to syn with the DR.
We need to make all this analysis to communicate the implication and expectation to the customer

I am having a similar problem in my current setup with the Avamar filling up at the DR site. I've followed the configuration guide to a tee on setting up Avamar/DD to Avamar/DD replication, however, no data is landing on the target Data Domain, only onto the Avamar. How can I ensure that data gets to the target site data domain?
