The short answer is that the Garbage Collection and Checkpoint jobs both put the system into read only state and therefore backups cannot be written to the system whilst those maintenance activities are in progress.

If the source (site 1) is read-only and the target (site 2) is read/write then replication will be able to occur.

let me explain
The site1 (avamar01-01) will replicate the site2 (avamar02-01).
The site1 doing checkpoint. The site2 is in normal operation.
I can run this from replication site1 to site2 in the same moment of the checkpoint ?
Because the site1 is ready-only, but replication will only read data from Site1.....
Recalling that's how site1 (read only), the site2's how (full access)
The site2 is not read-only, ok...
