Introduction

This article will introduce how to perform a replication on Avamar 7.0 GUI.

Detailed Information

What is Avamar replication?

Avamar replication is used to copy the data from an Avamar grid to another Avamargrid; we call them as the source grid and the destination grid. If the data on source grid is not available, you can also use the data on destination grid to recover the data.

So, what Avamar 7.0 replication is new on Avamar GUI?

1.     Easier and simple operations on Avamar GUI.

a.     Can support up to 10 replication tasks running independently and simultaneously.

b.    Separate retention policies can be configured on the destination server.

c.     You can configure replication priority of client in a replication task.

2.     Running a single process on Avamar single node or Avamar utility node (If your Avamar is multi-nodes).

3.     Monitoring view of the GUI has been improved.

The replication of versions of Avamar 6.1 or earlier uses Cron-Based mode; the replication of Avamar 7.0 or later is supporting both Cron-Based mode and Plug-in-Based mode.

You might say the above picture is too difficult to understand. For this, I will give you a simple explanation.

Left is using Cron-Based replication mode (Avamar 6.1 or earlier); right is plug-in-Based replication mode (new replication mode on Avamar 7.0 or later).

Cron-Based replication is using repl_cron.config to call the system crontabprocesses, and then calling avtar process to run replication.

Plug-in-Based replication is loading Management Console database. Then, Scheduler will trigger a workflow, and then it will call avrepl, and then trigger avtar process to run replication.

We will look at the difference between Cron-Based replication and Plug-in-Based replication. One is Cron-Based configuration, another one is Plug-in-Based configuration.

Now, we look at the new updates in Avamar GUI.

1.     More intuitive graphical window: There is a new Replication window added in Avamar GUI.

Then, I will introduce how to simply configure a replication on Avamar GUI.

Stop1: Add an Avamar client

Log in to Avamar GUI (Avamar Administrator) and click “Replication”

65.png

Find “Destinations” tab and click “New Destination”.

66.png

Step2: Configure the destination server

Enter the destination server's IP and credentials.

67.png

Step3: Create group

Click the yellow icon as show in below, and then enter Replication group name.

68.png

Select clients and backups.

69.png

Select the backup that you want to copy.

70.png

Select the destination server.

75.png

Set the expiration time of backup.

76.png

Set the schedule time.

77.png

So, the replication configuration was done.

Step4: Running a replication.

78.png

Step5: Monitor the status of replication.

79.png

2.     Supports multiple types of replication.

80.png

Avamar can support Many-to-One, One-to-Many, Chain and Cross replication. Avamar also supports Root To Root replication.

General replication as shown in above picture will replicate the backup and clients of source to the /REPLICATE domain. But, Root To Root replication will make the destination server and source server looks exactly the same. This type of replication is for migration and disaster recovery.

Today we have introduced how to perform a replication on Avamar 7.0 GUI. Hope this can help you.
