VSS backs up all volumes

We are running Avamar/Data Domain v.7.0.0-427. Because we are still on 7.0, VSS backups are stored in Avamar and the data is written to Data Domain. An upgrade is several weeks down the road. Until then, we are having the following problem.

We ran into an issue with the f_cache2.dat file being 19Gb on the C-Drive. We didn't want to expand the drive. Rather, we wanted to store the cache file on the D-drive where there was plenty of room. Support told us to the way to do this was to re-install the agent and direct it to install on the D-drive. The problem is that our D-drive, which is over 2TB is now being included in the VSS backup. This is killing our Avamar Capacity.

Is there a way to prevent the D-drive from being included in the VSS backup? Or is there a way to have the agent installed on the C drive and the cache files stored on the D-drive?

Excludes aren't supported for VSS System State backups -- the plug-in will back up any volume that the ASR writer determines is a critical volume. Your best bet will be to override the cache directory.

If you only have one client or a handful of clients with this issue, you can create a file called "avtar.cmd" inside the Avamar client's var folder (C:\Program Files\avs\var by default) and add the --cachedir flag:

--cachedir=D:/Program Files/avs/var/

If avtar.cmd already exists, add the cachedir flag on a separate line.

The cachedir flag can also be added to the dataset from the Options tab. The flag has to be entered as an advanced option. Make sure you have the correct plug-in selected when you add the option and don't forget to click the + sign before you click OK. For filesystem backups, enter cachedir in the Attribute field and the path to the cache directory in the Attribute Value field. For other plug-ins (such as the VSS System State plug-in), the flag needs to be specified as a "passthrough" flag so it should be entered as [avtar]cachedir in the Attribute field.

Hi,

This article explains how to move the cache files to another drive: Mitigating the potential impact of the size of the paging file cache.
