Windows 2003 r2 open file backup

We recently installed Avamar backup on Windows 2003 r2 file server. We are receiving errors regarding open files:

     (code 32: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process).

I was under the impression that avamar would backup open files with out installing an openfiler manager application

No this strictly a windows file server..

Here is a sample error:

File access error "Q:\WHQCommon\Teams\2011 Trade Program\Trade System\System Evaluation Criteria\Trade Management Scenarios.docx" (code 32: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process).

Debbie

Hello dstarm,

Basically Avamar do not have problems with this .

According to your description it looks like something is wrong with VSS on this Windows 2003 machine .

Please could you check if VSS is actually in running state ?

Which Avamar client you are using ?

I found that the VSS plugin is not configured for this system.

If we configure… will it automatically default to the C:\ drive or the drive where Avamar is installed. When initially installed there were space problems with C:\ during cache hash.

Also will it require a new full backup or continue where its at.

Debbie

OK, this should be configured .

this could be conifugred and relocated on some other drive leter using variable ... this is not a problem .

we can customize it to use free space on drive D:   f.x.

Please let me know how to proceed here .

Hello Debbie,

> VSS is set to manual.

Please start VSS on this machine ... or set it for automaicaly .....

When you start ad-hoc backup please check if VSS plugin is selected ...

I just noticed that the ‘windows plug in ‘ is configured… should this be set to “windows vss?’

Here we are Debiee,

Please create flag file called "avtar.cmd in your default location "\Program Files\avs\var (on the client Win2003) "and place parameters below on it :
============
--systemstatefile=FILE.bkf
--verbose=2
============

Now the "avtar"  invokes NTBackup, which generates a SystemState.bkf file in the EMC \var directory.
This file stores a snapshot of the Windows system state, as well as the Windows\Sysvol folder on servers using Active Directory.

You can specify --systemstatefile=FILE.bkf to override the default SystemState.bkf file location.

--verbose=2  turns on highly verbose messages including the avtar session ID and mount point information for each backup.

Please restart the Avamar client, and then start a backup again.
