backing up exchange larger than 500GB

We are looking to do mailbox backups of our exchange 2007 cluster, its 1.3 TB. In the best practice guide it is not recommended to have more than 500GB of databases per Avamar client. Is anyone backup exchange systems larger than 500GB? Any issues? Are you doing something special to work around the 500GB recommendation? How long does the backup take?

Thanks,
Glenn

The Avamar has a maintenance window, which varies from environment to environment. If the backup operation take longer than 20 hours to be performed, the Avamar can not perform such maintenance. This is a big problem.
If your Exchange server is a very good machine, it may be that the backup is completed in the correct time.

Description of a good machine: 16GB RAM. That memory, 4GB should be free to work and mount the Avamar cache.

Some processors quadcore.

To improve performance, you must create a separate cache for this DataSet. (P_cache and F_cache). check the manual tuning (OPERATIONAL BEST PRACTICES P / N 300-007-035) (page 40).

You must also be configured cache size. (filecache and hashcahe) to -4 and -8 respectively.

more than that, light a candle and pray hehehe.

500GB is a best practice figure but it's not a hard limit.

On an typical client we expect to scan 100GB of database data per hour so this figure is based on a 5hr average backup window. If you have a particularly fast client then you'll probably see higher performance.

A 1.3TB client would take upwards of 13 hours to complete its backup so for it to complete before the 6am morning cron run you would have to initiate the backup before 5pm. This doesn't take into account any possibility of data growth.

Also, remember that it's *critical* that your backups are scheduled to complete before the morning cron run (6am).

That's impressive.

How long does the backup take? How many data nodes are on the Avamar system? Is the system able to garbage collect data quickly enough as it expires?

We're backing up 2.6TB with a delta of 400GB at day. No issues other than killing the other machine's bandwidth for a good period of time.

Is all of the 8.7TB for those Exchange backups, or are you sending other stuff to it as well? I have a similarly sized grid coming in soon and I'm trying to get an idea of how folks are using similarly sized appliances.

We've got 5 nodes at about 8.7TB of usuable space. Garbage collection usually takes about 2 hours.

We've got about 190 different machines on it all over the southeast. Some Exchange, Linux, SQL, Mac OS and some just plain file level. Have about 7.5 GB protected.
