balancing nodes with Avamar

We have a 15 node Avamar grid. We started with 9 nodes in July 09 and added another 6 nodes in November of 09. When they added the nodes they kicked off a re-balancing of the nodes. We were originally told that the nodes should be within a couple tenths of a percent of each other. For some reason the first time they rebalanced the nodes it had to be cancelled. Everytime they tried to re-balance the nodes after that it would finish in about 4 minutes but the nodes were still about 7 or 8% apart. Now they are about 14% apart with the lowest node reporting 32% and the highest node reporting 46% capacity (via command line). The GUI shows us at about 73% full but we think we are losing out because the GUI reports the node with the highest capacity.

Originally EMC told us that it was very important that the nodes were within a couple tenths of a percent of each other but when the re-balancing kept finishing in 4 minutes they finally said it was no big deal because the stripes were balanced. We have no way of seeing this (that I am aware of) and believe that if the node were balanced correctly we would only be at about 65% capacity.

Wondering if anyone else has any experience or information on this issue?

Can’t help much with a solution, but I took a look at mine and it ranges from 87% to 90% (yes we are very close to being full).

It’s been like this since we started doing backups, there was always a 2 – 4% difference between the nodes.

Hi,

The nodes should balance within 2% of each other - based on the number of stripes per node (status.dpn output).

If you believe this needs further investigation I would open an SR with support via powerlink.
