maximum node supported by avamar data store
from avamar FAQ, it says avamar data store support 5 to 16 node. i'm wondering is utility node and spare node included in the 16 node config? or these 16 node are only data nodes?

EMC likes to identify these with all nodes included. For instance, a DS-18 has 1 Utility node + 1 Spare node + 16 Data nodes. A DS-6 would only have 4 Data nodes. You should have the data in at least 2 places. Even a single node should be replicated offsite to a second single node. If you want to grow/expand your array you need at least 3 data nodes. You need at least 3 data nodes to enable RAIN. This would protect you from a single node failure. Otherwise, it would be like having your hard drives without RAID. Yes, all 18 nodes and switch will fit into a single rack cabinet. We have 16 DS-18s and numerous smaller ones.

Hi,
This means 16 data nodes -- so the 16 node limit does not include the utility and spare node.
With a 16 node config, you will infact have 16 data nodes, 1 utility node, 1 spare node.

How about the minimum config? does it mean 5 data node + 1 utility + 1 spare? EMC told me the minimum config is 3 data node + 1 utility + 1 spare, so i guess the 16 config include utility and spare.
another question is: can i install all 18 node and all network switch in one rack?

Thanks for the info. Can the utility node from the first rack (16 Data + 1 Spare + 1 Utility), be used to manager the data nodes in another rack?
Or will I need another utility node for my second rack?

No, you need to have one utility node per avamar grid.
