CX-4PDAE-FD with other disks

Hello,

I'm new to EMC and storage world so sorry if my questions might have no sense.:-)

I bought a CX-2PDAE with 15x300GB(Seagate PN: ST3300007FCV, EMC PN: 9X1007-031) and I want to know if these disks can be used on a CX-4PDAE-FD KTN-STL4. The SPE is CX3-20F-DE 046-002-956-A02.

If the vault drives are 15k drives or EFDs instead of 10k drives, is there an improuvement in overall performance of the storage box?

Where can I find documentation for preparing and installing a CX3-20 from scratch?

Regards,

Raul

bare in mind though that mixing disks with a 4Gb back end connector cannot work @4Gb when mixed with disks with only 2Gb back end. The whole bus needs to adjust to satisfy the slowest of all disks.

I know that RRR. I bought the 2PDAE only because of the disks.

Anyway, I'm faceing now with a real big issue - a noob issue I might add:) - and I don't know if I have a convenient solution for this issue. I bought the CX3-20 SPE without the DAE-OS so right now I have only a DAE with empty hard drives. In my mind was the ideea that I will install FLARE by myself => WRONG. Didn't know that FLARE is not "installable"...at least not by normal user/customer.

I found out an article on this community forum from 2009 where it's written what I've mentioned above: FLARE can be installed on empty drives only by an EMC engineer. But this was three years ago so my "panic" tells me to ask again the same question:

Can I install FLARE on empty drives? If not, do I have any other solution besides sending empty drives to EMC and probably spending more money than the whole hardware on this installation?

I've searched and asked on ebay for DAE-OS but of course, almost all the sellers told me that they sell the DAE-OS together with the SPE and the rest of the system.

Regards,

Raul

unfortunately it's available to EMC employees/partners only.

Well, I never tried to reinstall it myself, but a colleague did and he said that to reimage you do need the first 5 drive preinstalled with RAID Groups/LUNs, so these drives HAVE TO BE Flare disks. They can be empty, but they have to be preformatted.

If not, you'll need EMC.

Thanks for the reply.

That's a interesting ideea. What about buying a DAE with FLARE for other system(e.g CX3-10) and try to "force" a software upgrade with FLARE for CX3-20 ?

That won't work. The disks will need to match the system. But when you're a partner, you'll be able to reimage the drives.
