CX3-20 navisphere reports empty slots when disks present

Question

I recently had to install 4 new disks into some empty slots in a CX3-20. Used the Navisphere taskbar and all went ok, but the disks were listed as faulted. Turns out they were 2Gb disk in a 4Gb bus. Navisphere wouldnt let me remove them properly because it said there were too many faults, so I just manually removed them. The slots showed empty after that ("E" symbol).
We got the disks replaced with 4Gb, and repeated the process. All appeared to go ok with the Navishpere Taskbar install new hardware, but the slots are still showing empty ... How can I remedy this? When I used maintenance and replace disk, it tells me there are no problems and nothing to replace.

I would remove the unbound disks that show as emtpy and try restarting the management server on each Storage Processor.

go to http:// /setup and after logging on select Restart Management Server.

Do the same for SPB. After the management server on each SP has been restarted and you can logon to Navisphere, try inserting the new disks into the empty slots and see if they come online.

Have you solve it? I got a similar problem. I got 2 FC fault disks... then i put in 2 new different model disks and the state change from "removed" (old fault disks) to "requested bypass" so I destroyed the LUNs and created new arrays with two disks less. Now I got two new disks (same model than the originals that came with it's clariion trays) so I'd like to expand arrays and LUNs but I can't. When I plug in the new disks in the empty slots the state of it goes to "powering up" but then just shows "empty".

I've reseted the management in /setup and /setup... but it still shows empty.

Are the new disks original EMC disk or just from the same manufacturer / model ? Keep in mind that emc disk are preformatted with a different block size. So if you get model x from the manufacturer it comes low level formatted with 512 bytes per block. EMC drives are low level formatted with a different size. The array will not recognize drives with a standard block size.

Thank you for reply. Yes... it's supposed to be for emc array. I bought it on eBay; it cames with the same emc tray than the originals. Any idea or comment?

Yes... according to the support matrix it's supported. By the way new disks are identically to the older original disks (even same firmware).

As far as I know, than this should simply work.

I have had a similar issue recently with a VNX and at the time I solved that by rebooting one of the SPs. EMC somehow knew which SP needed a reboot and that worked.

When you place the new disks in another slot, does the machne recognize the disks? Do they even spin up? Is the green LED of the disks on?

Thank you for replying. Orange led is on. I've tried to put disks in other slots in the same DAE and also in the second DAE, but the result is the same.

In Navisphere you can select the DAE and get some information on the type of DAE - the older CX3 had a DAE just for the ATA (DAE-ATA) disks, you could not put the fiber channel disks in that enclosure. Also, there are two backend speeds for the disks either 2Gb or 4Gb - you can use both in the same DAE, but the speed will be for the slowest disk. Also, if you put in a slower disk in the DAE you have to change something in flare - reboot I think (can't recall right now).

What is the part number of the two disks you're trying to install and where did you get them?

I've found that it has alternative part numbers wich are compatibles. it's supposed to be the same as 005048848.

The new disks I'm trying to spin up is a: Seagate cheetah 15k.6, model number ST3300656FCV, part number 9CH007-031, firmware HC08, bar code 118032600-A01. If you take a look in eBay you can found it searching: 141861998068.

(Also, it cames with the cx4 DAE trays)

Any thoughts?

That's a 300GB (4Gb backend bus speed) disk, so it should work. The part number 118-xxxxxx is actually what's called a sub-level part number - it's like a bare disk - when you combine it with other parts (the housing and so other stuff) it gets turned into a 005-xxxx part number which is the part number that you can order - like the 005048848.

If the other disks in the DAE are the same 4Gb bus speed, then it should spin up. If it's not coming on-line, then the disk may not be good.

Hello everyone.

I asked the seller and told me he never formatted disks, he took it from a working storage. However he refund my money and invited me to let him know if I solve it and share how.

Now... is there a possibility that disks would be ok and the problem were the DAE? It shows a fault sign (SLOT 0 ENCLOSURE 0: FAULTED). Disks has no F marks. Before I though It was because of unrecognized disks (E marked) but when I unplugged it it still remains faulted.

Any comment?

PS:I also have "power/cooling module A1" faulted and "enclosure SPE SPS B" faulted too.
