CX500 - Oracle 10G/ASM - Solaris 10 hosts - MetaLUN expansion question

Greetings:

I have Oracle 10G clients on Solaris 10.  Each of these hosts are running an instance of ASM.

Servers in the near future are going to be allocated a 300G MetaLUN.  Now, the unix sys admin team will prepare the pseudo device and then Oracle ASM will take over.

My question(s) are for future expansion of this host.  When the 300G needs to be expanded to 450G or whatever, what are the tasks on the solaris side?  Can the Solaris sys admin expand this volume (or file system) without loss of current data?  Can Oracle's ASM dynamically pick up the new growth of the MetaLUN and expand without data loss or any other issues??

We are using ASM on AIX and Linux, we never expand existing LUNs ..we present new LUNs and allow ASM “restripe” the disk group onto new devices. You get the benefit of additional drives (more IOPS) and more queues in the OS.

Interesting....

I have already done striping here on the array side (thus the striped expanded metalun).  This current metalun has (2) components, one component LUN on separate raid groups.  Oh, this is also all RAID 1/0.

Most feedback I have gained on discussions indicates that they try to avoid striping at the host level and let the hardware side manage all aspects of striping.  Does this hold true to you?  Are you not better off "striping" on the array side versus at the host/software level?

Always appreciate the conversation regarding these matters!

i know we get into plaid situation if you presented striped MetaLUNs and then stripe them again in ASM. On Clariion i present regular FLARE LUNs. The benefits of doing striping at the OS level is that you are avoiding creating hot spots, data is evenly spread over multiple LUNs. This also allows you to balance workload across SPs, where with MetaLUN all component LUNs reside on the same SP.
