Expanding RAID groups

I've got a R5 4+1 RAID group made up of 146gb FC disks. I'd like to expand the RAID group but I only have 300gb FC disks available.

Can I expand this RAID group with a 300gb disk? But more importantly...should I?

Any help would be appreciated!

You should not try to expand the RAID group with 300 GB drives - as the effective space on these 300 GB Drives will be reduced to 146 GB in order to match the Raid Group with lowest disk size.

You may consider the following options -

1) Create RAID group and LUNs on the 300 GB Drives and then create MetaLuns with the LUNs on the existing R5 group of 146 GB Drives - this will provide you more space on a given LUN by using MetaLUN and also may provide performance gain

2) Create RAID Group on the 300 GB Drives and use LUN Migration utility to move one or a few LUNs from the existing RAID group to the new 300 GB Disks RAID Group.

However, for MetaLUN or Reconfiguring RAID Groups or using LUN Migration - you may refer to the appropriate technical documents available on powerlink for more details.

Others may provide some more valuable inputs.
