IP Address is incorrect (ESXi 5 Hosts) in Unisphere Manager ?

Hi,

For unknown reason, the IP addresses of those ESXi 5 Hosts connected to CX4-240 Storage Array has been changed from x.x.15.x to x.x.13.x

In this way, we are not able to update information for those ESXi Hosts.  Moreover, one of them has status = "Unmanaged".

We have restart the Management Server for the Storage Array but still gets the same result.  On the other hand, all ESXi Hosts are working properly - All of them are connected to LUNs assigned and VMs are running too.

We would like to seek your advice is there any way to change the IP address ?  We have attempted to connect Host for x.x.15.x but it failed.  I guess it is due to the HBAs are already logged in.

Your advice is osught.

May I ask a silly question - Do you mean Host ID is different from HLU ?

Thanks

Host ID equal to HLU Value but not equal to LUN ID. Host ID and LUN ID they are both different Identifiers.

Hi,

I have followed your advice.  Once those hosts are removed from the Storage Group, all has gone (In Navisphere Manager 29)

When I attempt to reconnect host, it says "Errors encountered while retrieving information from this host".  I wonder whether it is due to vCenter intergration ?

I have removed the vCenter Intergration but finds out those Hosts are still there with the wrong IP addresses (Unisphere Manager 30)

How to disconect them ?

Thanks

To connect and disconnect a host to a storage group:

- In the tree panel, expand Storage Systems, CLARiiON Arrays, , Storage Groups.

- Right-click a storage group and select Connect/Disconnect Hosts.

- The CLARiiON Storage Group Configuration wizard – Connect/Disconnect Hosts page appears.

- To remove a host from the Hosts Connected to Storage Group table, select the host and click Remove. Only hosts in the Hosts Connected to Storage Group table are connected to the storage group when the action is executed.

- Click Finish.

When I select the HBA, I only get Reconnect OK and Help button.  There is no deregister button.

Should I pull the cable out from the Host ?  Besides, it still remembers the vCenter Information (LIke which LUN is assigned to it) ?

I have to get it done tonight.

Thanks

You need to be in engineering mode for deregistering a host from Connectivity status (Ctrl+Shift+F12 and engineering password).

I would need some time to read and research more about ESX4.x to ESX5 upgrade and issues related to it and other related informationwith whatever limited resources I have and if I found anything I will update this space at the earliest.

If there is a significant business impact due to this right now then I can only suggest to Open a Service Request with VMWare and/or EMC Technical Support. I have not received any response as such from any VMWare Guys so I am gonna read myself and see what I can update.

I have deregister those hosts.  Thanks !

Then I turn on the ESX Host and attempt to register HBA.  After typing the IP and Host Name, it says the other SP has already got that host information and then connected with the wrong IP address again *sigh*

To remove a host from the connectivity status screen, you need t oderegister each path of that host. Afterwards you can try to either let the host register itself or you do it manually.

There is another strange issue is when I check the connectivity status of that Host with wrong IP address - It has ~ Management (Instead of "Host Name") !!!

Thanks

When the array sees an HBA logged in in Unisphere, it will not allow you to deregister that path until the HBA is logged off. You can go into engineering mode and see the de-register button, but that is not the correct way to de-register a host.

You should remove the host from the storage group first, then power off the host, which will log out the HBA's, then you can deregister from the Connectivty Status window.

When you first power on a new host connected to an array, the host will attempt to auto-register with the array. This depends on the host agent running on the host, the IP address on the host and if it can see the SP Management Ports on the array. You normally do no need to register the host, it should take place automatically.

Are you using iSCSI for connecting the hosts to the array? If so, make sure that the LAN IP address is on a different subnet from the iSCSI ports. Also, if using iSCSi, on the array you would normally not use a gateway address for the iSCSI ports (assuming that you are not routing the iSCSI traffic). On the array you should only have the one gateway set for the Management Ports.

Also, if using iSCSI, do not use the 192.168.x.x subnets.

~Mangement means that path is not connected to a Storage Group. When a host is first logged in and registered, but before you assign the host to a Storage Group, the paths for that host are assigned to the ~Management Storage Group - a holding place until you assign the host to a real Storage Group - in Connectivity Status you should see each path and what it is assign to - storage group or ~managment.

Dear Glen,

1) We are using FC and not iSCSI

2) Yes, you are right. When we add the host to a Storage Group, it shows the name of Storage Group (Not  ~Management any more).

3) We did shutdown host, deregister HBA from Connectivity Status, turn on Hosts.  We find that

a) The 2 HBAs on the Host (each has 2 paths) are logged - Yes

b) Status is "Unknown, Fabric, Host Agent not reachable"

c) Registered - No

4) Since we are running ESXi 5 Host, there is no Navisphere Agent on those hosts.

Your advice is sought.

Tony - you need to determine if the host agent (VMware's) is configured to use the correct IP address for the server. The IP address should be on the same subnet as the SP ports. Can you ping from the host to the SP Management Port? Can you ping from the SP port to the server?
