Is FLARE 30 available now ?

Hi,

We are planning to upgrade / migrate our existing CX3 system to CX4 SAN in late October this year.  From the news, we are aware that FLARE 30 will be released soon.

We just wonder whether it has been released and whether it is possible for us to ask the vendor to get it install in our new CX4 system.

Thanks

Here is a weird one.  I saw FLARE 30 out there and downloaded it yestersay.  Now when I go out there all I see if FLARE 28 and 29.  30 is no where to been seen!  Anyone know if FLARE 30 was pulled for some reason?

I noticed this too. I didn't have it, emailed support and they added it, now it's gone again.

It would be helpful to know why it was pulled/disappeared.

A KB solution has been published. Please see:

emc250479 - "There is a potential for data loss on pre-existing Thin LUNs after a non-disruptive upgrade (NDU) from Release 28 or Release 29 to Release 30 (04.30.000.5.004)"

Is there any recomendations/best practice about adding drives to a Storage Pool and what Raid types for Storage Pools are supported? I saw in a webcast that 5 drives 4+1 was recommended in the create storage pool box for example for a Raid 5 pool. Is it as simple as 5,10,15 for Raid 5, 10, 20 for Raid 6 etc...

Thanks for any advice.

I found the following statment from "h5512 Virtual Provisioning White Paper"

"Recommended Pool size are multiples of 5 for Raid 5,

Multiples of 8 for Raid 6

Multiples of 8 for Raid 1/0"

Hope this helpful.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure about RAID 1/0 but now you have confirmed it's supported in Flare 30.

I have found the doc mentioned which is very useful.

The Unisphere CLI pdf doc only shows Raid 5 and 6 when using the command to create pools but somewhere hidden later in doc in a footnote it states Flare 30 supports RAID 1/0. Doc needs amending if any EMC guys are reading this.

Just waiting for the performance and reliability doc for Flare 30 to be published now.

The new storage efficiency enablers for FLARE 30 are FAST, FAST cache and Block Data Compression. These are chargeable licensed enablers. They are available individually. There is also an Advanced FAST Suite which includes FAST, FAST Cache, EMC Unisphere Quality of Service Manager (formerly Navisphere Quality of Service Manager), and EMC Unisphere Analyzer (formerly Navisphere Analyzer). Contact you EMC sales rep for pricing.

Would you be able to post the EMC part numbers for these (new and upgrade)?

I suggest you start off by reading the Flare 30 release notes.

You should also ensure that any attached servers are supported so check against the EMC CLARiiON Support matrix.

If you are replicating to another array ensure all pre-req are met also.

If you use any other EMC software such as replication manager you may need to upgrade those products at same time. Again check the relevant support matrixes.

Finally download and install Navisphere or Unisphere Service manager which will take you thru the steps of downloading and installing the software.

But if as it sounds you are inexperienced I suggest you get your local EMC ASN Velocity Partner to help you or engage EMC directly.
