With R28, the max is 256, across all of the CX4-series arrays.

With R29 :

CX4-120 - 512
CX4-240 - 512
CX4-480 - 1024
CX4-960 - 1024

You mentioned that the storage groups will be used for Replication Manager.  Keep in mind that the following names as required by RM should be considered "prefixes":

1) "EMC RM SANCopy SG"

The LUNs associated with this storage group make them available as SAN Copy candidates (just to mention it, this is not required if doing in-frame SAN Copy)

2) "EMC Replication Storage"

The LUNs associated with this storage group make them available within RM to be used as SnapView Clone (targets)

If you should need any more than the maximum supported in one storage group you can create another storage group: "EMC Replication Storage2" and it will recognize the LUNs added to that also.

However, in addition to the maximum number of LUNs that can be added to a single storage group, you will also need to consider the maximums for the layered apps themselves that will be the replication technology used to create the replicas.
