Percentage Fragmented is still 0%
Hi,
We have started fragmentation of a SATA (RAID 5) RAID Group on a CX3 SAN for more than 24 hours. However, it still shows that 0% is fragmented.
Defragmentation Priority has been set to HIGH and in the "Additional State Information", we get the following 3 rows:
-------------------------------------------
The RAID Group is Defragmenting
The RAID Group is Halted
The RAID Group is Defragmenting
-------------------------------------------
It is a standalone SAN (i.e. there is no mirroring). From statistics, we find that both SPA and SPB's utilization is 2% only.
Your advice is sought.

Normally you will get that Halted message when you have a lun that trespasses which is on that RG. once it is done with the trespass, it starts the defrag again
ANd yes, SATA defrags can take days and might be showing a percentage for awhile. You cannot stop a defrag once you start it but you can change it's speed. Move it to high overnight or when there is low IO.

Somehow, the message changed to
-------------------------------------------
The RAID Group is Defragmenting
The RAID Group is Halted
The RAID Group is Transitioning
-------------------------------------------
and now it becomes
-------------------------------------------
The RAID Group is Defragmenting
The RAID Group is Transitioning
-------------------------------------------

Also depents on the size of the disks and numbers of spindels in the RG and Raid type, so many factors are in, if you want to calculate the defrag time.

Hi remember that defragging a SATA RG can take very long time, some times more than 3-4 days, depents on the size of the lun there have to be moved and the I/O load on the luns.
