Problems with Celerra Manager 5.6

I took a look through the forums and didn't see this issue, so forgive me if I missed it someplace.

We are running 5.6.47code, Celerra Manager 5.6. Java version 1.6.0_11 (also tested on 1.6.0_18)

I'm having java problems with both IE 7 and Firefox 3.x (both 3.5.x and 3.6).  Basically what happens is the following:  Initial login to CM after a workstation reboot is fine.  Get 'checking software version...' and it goes right to the login.  After working with CM for awhile (anywhere from 10 minutes to 60 minutes) the java panels in the application show red Xes, indicating a problem.  At this point if I attempt to log into CM again, it will sit at 'checking software version...' forever, while the bottom bar shows 'done' with an error.  Checking the java console gives me a large list of errors (I'll post those below).

Things I've already done/checked:

Upgraded from 1.6.0_11 to _18.  Uninstalled _11, then installed _18, same behavior.  Uninstalled _18 and reinstalled _11, same error.

Verified only one java version on the system at a time.

Workstation reboot fixes the problem (for the afforementioned 10min-60min)

Also if I uninstall/reinstall java it will briefly work (same as a workstation reboot).
Verified there is only one java plugin listed in IE/Firefox and that it's the same version as is on the system.

I'm kind of lost as to what to try next.  Here are the java console errors from the last time I ran _18 (they're identical to _11):

Java Plug-in 1.6.0_18

Did you check with the version of JRE that came with the software? You 'll find the compatible version of JRE in the the "Tools and Application" CD of the NAS software - if you don't have it please get in touch with your EMC person who installed it.

I am not sure what version of JRE 5.6.47 code comes with - 5.6.46 was with JRE 1.6.0_11 - but you mentioned that you already tried with this version.

Next step will be - try rebooting the control station.

If the problem continues - I 'll suggest to open a service request with EMC support team.

Thanks,
Sandip

That's the version that comes with it and the CS have been rebooted multiple times.  I was hoping to avoid opening a ticket with support on this one, but I will if I have to.  In the meantime if anyone's seen anything similar and/or a fix that would be great.

Thanks!

Hi,

Did you tried to run CM on another PC with same Java version? Try to un-install java then install it again and disable the automatic update for java before trying to open CM again. I am not sure if it will work, but you can try it.

best regards

osama

Yep, tried all that and it didn't help.  Oddly enough I haven't had any problems in the last few days.  I haven't made any changes, so I have no idea what's up with it.

I have a similiar problem. Did you ever obtain resolution?

Thanks,

Well as I said above it eventually just started working.  Then it stopped again.  No changes to the machine, no software installs, nothing.

No, I never found a solution.  Eventually I just used a different machine which was identical to my workstation and it worked fine.  (I know they're identical because they all come from the same image).  I had my workstation reimaged and still didn't get it working.  Possibly an issue with RAM or something in my original machine...but this was the only thing that didn't work, so I really have no idea what the issue was.

I'm going to chalk this one up to Sunspots or something.  I have no idea what caused it.  It seems to be working fine presently on the new machine but even THAT machine has some issues from time to time.  As I said: sunspots.  That or (probably more likely) there is just something in the software that is glitched and only exhibits itself on rare occasions during a specific set of circumstances.  I haven't been able to identify those circumstances (it's probably something REALLY low level that I couldn't find anyhow), so...I'll just deal with it like it is.  Heck, could even be a bad install on the control station, even though it works 90% of the time.  Next time we do an upgrade we'll see if the problems go away or not.

Thanks for the response. I like the sunspot reasoning; think I'll stick with that explanation also.

Thanks again.
