Laptop will not shut down or sleep

When I select shut down or sleep on my Dell XPS 13 - the laptop powers down and then instantly powers up and reboots by it self. The only way to power off the machine is to hold the on button which doesn't feel like a particularly sustainable way of operating the laptop. Is there a way to resolve this issue anybody can assist with?! It's incredibly annoying and concerning.
