Clariion VSS Provider & Navicli & backup software.

Hi,

 

I installed the Clariion VSS Provider (v1.5.0.3.5) shipped with the EMC AX150i (Flare version 02.20.150.5.022) but I can't make it work. As specified in the installation process, the Navisphere CLI software (v6.20.0) is also required so I installed it too.

A ClariionSPAddress file, containing the IP addresses of the AX150i SP has been created into the C:\Program Files\EMC\Navisphere CLI directory.

 

The VSS provider is called by backup softwares and linked to the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy service (see: http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/2b0d2457-b7d8-42c3-b6c9-59c145b7765f1033.mspx?mfr=true).

 

Each time a backup software tries to backup data located on a volume created on the AX150i, I get the following messages:

---1 Informational message ---

EMC CLARiiON VSS Provider 1.5.0.3.5 Loaded

---2 Error Message --- The CLARiiON VSS Provider was unable to support SnapCopy for LUN UID 60:06:01:60:06:66:1A:00:44:81:90:BD:70:C6:DB:11 on ANY storage system SPs listed in the ClariionSPAddress file.

---3 Error Message --- The CLARiiON VSS Provider cannot support the creation of a shadow copy that consists of the following devices: \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE2

 

I really want to make it work, as I want to be able to backup the data of a server that has a volume located on the AX150i,  without taking care of opened files and so on. As this server is a file server and also a backup server, the snapshot feature can not be used here. Moreover, it is specified in AX150i documentation that we have to stop all the I/O of a volume before making a snapshot of it (if someone knows how to bypass this limitation, maybe thanks to an  additionnal software, I'd like to know it too!).
