Remembering how to configure Storage MD

Hello friends,

I have an MD3400 configured on a Windows 2008 server.

I will install an MD1200 to expand my disk space.

However, the MD1200 space I will use on another Windows 2012 server.

What I have doubts:

1 - Install an HBA on the Windows 2012 server;
2 - Connect the MD3400 SAS cables to the Windows server 2012. Remember that it will remain connected to the Windows 2008 server;
3 - Connect the MD1200 to the MD3400;
4 - Install the Dell Modular Disk (MD) Storage Array Management on the MD3400 server;
5 - Allow access to the Windows 2012 server for the MD3400 to see the new MD1200 data area;
6 - Create a virtual disk using the MD1200 disks.

Is there any data corruption problem that is on the MD3400 with this connectivity? Do I need to have any specific care? Perform any specific procedure, such as turning off the MD3400 before connecting the MD1200? Or can I make it hot?

I have a host already assosed the MD3400 and I will have another now. However, it should not have access to existing virtual disk data to prevent data corruption.

Can I create a new virtual disk with the MD1200 disks and allow only the hos server Windows 2012 to see this new virtual disk?

Where do I download the Dell Modular Disk (MD) Storage Array Management to manage the MD3400 / MD1200 for Windows 2012?

How do I allow the Windows 2012 server to access only the MD1200 data? (Configuration)

Thank you.

Perfect.

Does the MD1200's connectivity to the MD3400 need to be performed on any specific port?

Is the port used to connect the MD3400 to MD1200 the same port used to connect to the server HBA?

The MD3400 can I connect to as many servers (hosts)?

Thank you.

Hello Sandro Silva Alves,

Yes you can use your MD1200 on your windows 2012 server.  You will need to power down your MD3400 to connect your MD1200.  Once you have connected your MD1200 to your MD3400, then you can use MDSM onto configure host access and create your virtual disk.  Here is the link to the deployment guide just in case you need it.  Also here is the link to the administrator guide & if you look on page 66 it explains how to configure host access.  On page 73 it explains how to create your virtual disk.

Hello Sandro Silva Alves,

You need to connect the MD1200 to the SAS expansion port on your MD3400 controller.  No there are SAS expansion ports on each controller, that you connect your MD1200.  You can connect up to 4 host with Dual Redundant & 8 host single connected.

After adding the MD1200 does it need to perform some discovery?

Or when I try to create a new virtual disk, are the MD1200 disks automatically available?

That's right the cabling?

Hello Sandro Silva Alves,

Once you connect your MD1200 to your MD3400 & boot both your MD3400 will see your MD1200.  Once it is seen then you will need to configure your new virtual disk and assign it to a host.
