How to delete old backup files from data domain to reclaim disk space?
Hi,
Is is fine to manually delete old backup files from data domain by mounting the nfs shares on a Linux box and delete them (rm -f) ?
I have no cleanable space left and want to free some space by deleting the backup files older than 6 month ( our original retention policy was 12 month) , was able to list all old files ( excluded the volhdr and other volume related files) and want to delete them from the DataDomain, is this correct way to do it?
Thank,
S M

Unless you have some application which would think data is there otherwise - I see no issue by removing it. If deletion is controlled by some application (eg. backup application), then you should do it through application.

If using backup application, as you asked, then backup application catalog is leading one. Check that catalog for expired backup sets with location being on DD.

Thanks for the response.
I have checked that , I am using Netbackup as backup application and all retention are properly being imposed on data .There is no data in that DD storage unit which has crossed retention but still lying from Netbackup backup application .BUT there is oracle and SQL data whose backup directly goes to data domain via ddboost .how can I identify that how older that data is present in dd.
