IBM i (AS/400) failed to overflow onto another VTL tape

Hello,

We were running a SAVCHGOBJ backup and the VTL tape filled up to capacity and the backup stopped with error. Expected that Data Domain would simply get the next available tape for the category (DAILY) and continue. Don't understand why this did not happen and want to make sure it works properly in the future.

When the error occurred I exported the filled tape to the vault and told the system to retry (reply R to qsysopr message) and the backup restarted. Log shows it noticed that the former tape JDPD04 wasn't there and it automatically mounted and used JDPD10 and the backup then completed.

Concern is why didn't the mounting of the next available tape in category happen automatically?

Thanks

It usually works for multiple tapes and overflows onto another tape. It didn't in the case I have described.

Are you using a backup application like BRMS, LXI, ROBOT SAVE or just the CL commands? If only using the CL commands there is no automation unless you assign more then 1 tape drive to the job.
