shonu,

Unfortunately there is not current solution for backing up to DataDomain with NDMP without VTL.

Hi

how can i make NDMP backup with VTL based on IP network instead of Fibre Channel ? I need to backup the DM directly with NDMP over VTL to Data Domain and send the catalog to my backup server.

Thanks

Alberto

Hi Patrick,

From document you have provided, page 155:

* The NDMP Tape Server feature introduced with DD OS 5.0 allows NAS products with
NDMP support to connect to a Data Domain system over Ethernet. The set up and
control of the backup is handled by a certified Data Management Application. This
section lists the supported applications.
* NDMP Tape Server requires EMC Celerra models running DART OS 5.6.5 and above,
EMC Isilon models running OneFS OS 5.5 and above, EMC VNX models running FILE
7.0 and above, VNXe OE 2.0.0 and above, and NetApp models running Data ONTAP
7.3 and above.

After reading this I would conclude it is possible to run NDMP over Ethernet to Data Domain with above listed NAS products. In Shonu's case, NetBackup 7.6 is supported.

For VNX, I believe this article can help: https://support.emc.com/docu48452_Configuring-NDMP-Backups-on-VNX-8.1.pdf?language=en_US. Look under Three-Way backup section, page 23. I haven't tried it myself but it looks like a way to go.

Hi this is not really correct. You can backup from certain NAS units directly to a DD NDMP.  We have done this on several times from a Celerra and VNXe units using BackupExec for example. On BackupExec there is away to connect directly to the NAS using NDMP and then go directly to the DD server.
