Too many 'spares' in a single dg
Hi All,
I am running 5.4.4.3 and replaced a failed disk in Encl 3 which already had 2 'spare' disks, but the 3rd is from Encl 2. From a 'global sparing' perspective, are there any issues with this, or is this ok?

Hi,
KB; 180722
This says the following;
If all spares are used in an ES20 or ES30 shelf, the Global Sparing feature will look for a spare drive with the same capacity in another ES20 or ES30 shelf. If a spare with the same capacity is not found, the Global Sparing feature will use another size spare drive for reconstruction.
Note: This will reduce the storage capacity within that enclosure and the drive should be returned to the disk group where it belongs as soon as possible. (Contact your Support provider for assistance with this procedure).
You should raise a support call for them to help you with this, I would be uncomfortable talking you through this here.
Regards,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, trying to move the disk from Encl 3 back to Encl 2 doesn't work the same as previous DDOS versions, such as 4.9.x. I tried to fail the disk and then unfail it, but it stays in the same Encl 3 as a 'spare' disk. Typically doing this would work, but it does'nt seem to here. Especially now, since when viewing disks from CLI: 'disk show state' you don't get to see which disks belong to which disk groups now, as in my example of DDOS 4.9.x where running from CLI: 'disk show raid-info' printed out the disks vertically. But, I suppose, running dm_map may prove to show better results of knowing which disks belong to which dg.
Thanks,
Steven

Hi Steven,
Storage show all
That should help you paint the picture of associated disk to disk groups that you're looking for.
sysadmin@DD01# storage show all

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you for sending. I am hoping; as you can see the 'spare' disks don't have any designation, that it clears up which disk to fail and unfail if necessary, in order to get one disk moved back to its proper place.

Hi Jonathan,
I got it fixed. I failed disk 2.12, which in turn started 'reconstruction' on disk 3.9, leaving 2 'spares' in Encl 3 (3.3 and 3.15) and then disk unfail 2.12, which then made that disk a 'spare', leaving that disk and disk 2.15 as spares in Encl 2.

That's great news, it's hard to advise accurately on things like this in case there is something that we don't see and send you in the wrong direction
So it looks more like this now?
