VTL and Fiber

Question:  I have a customer that wants to connect to a DD2500 using fiber...

Isn't the fiber to be used only if VTL is used?

Thanks....

No worries - you're doing fine.

DDBoost over FC is supported on DD2500.

You will need the DD license applied for it and to validate that the backup application is capable of supporting this feature.

Can you use the fiber and not use VTL?

Thanks

data domain is not a storage array, it's a backup target.

I'm not sure why your question has been answered in this way...I must have missed something...?

Fibre/FC on DD can be used for VTL and also by DDBoost FC - DDBFC.

DDBoost used to be only via Ethernet but now DDBoost FC is possible.

Something that is worth validating here is that they really do mean FC and not Optical 10Gbe - looks the same physically but is obviously not the same.

DD2500 support Copper/Twinax 10Gbe, Optical/SFP 10Gbe (and 10000BaseT but not relevant to your question).

and FC.

Optical 10gbe and FC both use a MMF optical LC fibre cable, hence why I've just put it in here for validation.

Jonathan

Well!! If you have 8G FC not 10 G FC then you can use either DDVTL / FC provided you have licence for DDVTL or even both you have enough ports (read IO modules) in data Domain.

Even 10G fibers comes with SFP connector which actually encapsulates FC under IP protocol but cant be used with VTL or direct FC fabrics

Looks like the customer wants to use DDBoost with Fiber Channel......

I'm not exactly the sharpest stick on the bunch when it comes to Data Domain!

Thanks...
