Use external source to report on coverage

Afternoon all,

I want to use active drectory to compare the machines in an OU to the machines we are currently backing up.

Is this possible?

Is it a sensible way to check coverage?

Can someone point me to the documentation on it?

Many Thanks

Matt

  Hi Matt

Yes, this can be done but will require a custom report.   You would use an "External" datasource named "Active Directory Host List" (the description of this datasource is attached & can also be gotten from clicking on the "Description" button on the Report Item Properties dialogue).

You would then use the "Backup Client Config" datasource and merge the two together - the matches have to be exact.

I would advise you to use this in DPA 5.7.

You could use this method for checking but it may not cover ALL your hosts as there could be servers not registered to the AD and/or perhaps they are unix based ?  So it really depends on your environment's standards, possible naming conventions, etc

You could use a condition against OS type to exclude non-Windows clients.

Brilliant. I will give this a try.

I see this query was from a long time ago.  I have done this type of custom report but encountered difficulty when the Active Directory query (which was filtered for servers and excluded workstations) returns more than 1,000 entries.

Did anyhere find a solution to that?
