Where does TSM Backup Job data get pulled from for the All Jobs report?

This is a common question that I have been asked.  Many times the TSM admin will compare the DPA 'All Jobs' report to the summary table within TSM, and find that there are more jobs being reported in DPA than they see within TSM.  The reason for this is that we collect both Manual and Scheduled jobs.

Scheduled Jobs: These jobs are collected from the TSM Summary Table.

Manual Jobs: Any manual job that is kicked off, whether it's manually kicked off or automatically starts after a failure of a scheduled job, will be recorded in the Event Table and will also create and entry in the activity logs. DPA collects all of the job information from the event table so these jobs will be reported in the All Jobs report.

In order to accurately compare the DPA report to TSM, all of the jobs will need to be pulled from the Summary Table, and Event table or activity logs.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in the 'All Clients' report we will report the latest run of the job.  If a scheduled job fails and TSM automatically restarts the job and it completes successfully, this job will be reported as successful even though the summary table displays this as failed. The All Clients report will only display 1 entry for the job even though there are multiple runs.  To see both the failed and successful runs, the 'All Jobs' report or 'Job Details' report would need to be run against the client.

I hope this information is helpfull.

Thanks,

Joe
