Discovery devices with different root passwords
Hello
I'm doing a lot of testing on the Dell Openmanage Enterprise.
We have a very large environment with many Dell servers.
Each of these servers has a different root password.
For example, I can use the Excel import to specify many hosts for the disc cover, but I am not allowed to provide any logins.
So I can only import or add one host at a time.
Is there any way to discover multiple hosts but not to enter passwords until after?
thank you very much for help

Hi and thanks for the question. You are correct, the csv takes ranges / IP as input but not pw.
Most folks will standardize on a smaller number of administrative passwords to make it easier to manage. If you do keep unique pw for each iDRAC, it would require a separate range (inconvenient :) )
Thanks,
Rob

I think this is a pertinent question considering that all Dell servers are now shipping with randomized iDRAC root passwords (cya calvin!). While great for security, having to go into 80 new servers and create an account that OME can use to discover the device and then apply config is....tedious.
There really does need to be a way for bulk importing of servers, by using CSV or some other method

Yes, totally understand.
One workflow that some folks use is the following:
-use OpenManage Mobile to scan the QR codes on the server tag.
-this will build up a list of system passwords
-this list can be sent over as input to Dell License Manager and used to normalize the passwords
Maybe that is an option.
Thanks!

hello
Your proposed solution is currently not applicable to me.
I'll probably have to add all my servers manually if it can't be easier.
thanks

Ok.
Are your server passwords different because you ordered them with 'random' passwords shipped from Dell? --which is an option you can select.
Or have they been changed to unique passwords by your corporate on boarding practice? Just asking as I'm trying to see if there are additional workflow alternatives I can look for.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi
All servers have their own passwords. This is a company policy.
I have a lot of servers to integrate. A CSV with server address + username and password would probably be the easiest method. I would prefer that, too.
thx

Yeah, this is tricky folks.
For most of our products going years back, and indeed for many tools in the industry, they are somewhat oriented to the use of an administrator credential or a few, manageable number of creds. So it's pretty common.
That said, your company may have certain requirements that make this problematic. Individual discovery ranges may need to be used, but it can be tedious.
I'll certainly pass the feedback along to the right folks for review.
Thanks!
