When can we expect an updated OME that does not use Silverlight?

We will will soon be restricted for using the Silverlight plugin in both IE and Firefox because of upcoming security changes.  When will OME get an upgrade that does not rely on Silverlight?  This will become a serious issue if it is not addressed.

Firefox just ended support for Silverlight as well.  This should be a priority for Dell.

Just wanted to add a link to a blog post describing the release of the new OME version.

At Dell EMC, simplicity is our methodology and our mantra

Will it be a fee application as the current OME is?

Licensing will be the same as OME today.

Hello,

Silverlight is now completely out of development and has a end of support data of 2021 and is not supported on any modern browsers except IE11, is there any update on when dell OME will upgrade past silverlight?

Thank You,

I suggest you to take a look at OpenManage Enterprise which is the future of OpenManage Essentials.

Any update on this?  is the program linked up above official now or still being developed?  And does it have the same capabilities for monitoring and alerting as OME?

Hello,

OpenManage Enterprise is the official successor to Essentials. It is actively receiving updates and patches, but it is the recommended management software of the two. Enterprise operates with out-of-band management, whereas Essentials had in-band management support. You can still get your hardware information/alerts and deploy firmware updates using Enterprise.

Enterprise will provide you the reporting and update functionality you mentioned.

As far as the in-band/out-of-band thing, Enterprise is basically going to lean more on the iDRAC and leveraging more resources there, as opposed to Essentials leveraging the resources from OpenManage Server Administrator. With Enterprise, you don't have to install anything beyond the Enterprise appliance.

We only use OME for two things.

  1. Getting alerts for things that OMSA reports on (Pending driver failures, bad batteries, offline servers, etc)
  2. Pushing BIOS updates to our servers every so often.

Can the Enterprise program do both of those?  I've never understood the whole in-band out-of-band thing to know which is which.

Thanks.

That is great for anyone that is using iDrac. We don't have it on about half of our servers and the ones that have iDRAC dont currently have ip addresses. And with the vlan we have we would have to have a lot more IP addresses to address every iDRAC in each server. I feel like this is the old Altiris by Symantec all over again or when OM Essentials replaced IT Assistant. And we loose a lot of existing functionality. In each new version of Dell's management software they take out features and make us struggle with what is left. I think i will have to start looking for a 3rd Party management software since Dell wants to leave its customers in the dust.

Yes OpenManage Enterprise can do both of these things. It is geared towards Out-of-band management using the iDRAC in the Dell PowerEdge Servers, but we can still do an inventory of an Operating System and receive alerts from there with OMSA. For firmware updates the only method remaining is to push them to the iDRAC. We do offer tools to do firmware updates inband (inside the OS) with for instance the Dell System Update.

We as Dell believe strongly in the fully Agent Free Systems Management paradigm and as such develop our tools to reflect that.

@mike4ta
I can understand your frustration, especially after the Altiris à Symantec Altris shifts we decided to take back the development of our Systems Management tools in to our own house. The first iteration of that was OpenManage Essentials which has been around for over 8 years now already. Not all the choices we made there were the best in hindsight (Silverlight being one of them ). That is why with OpenManage Enterprise we decided to build it from the ground up.

Since we already have been investing in Out-of-Band management since 2009 with the introduction of the IDRAC with Lifecycle Controller the choice was made to leverage that fully in OpenManage Enterprise.

That being said you can still do inventory and alerting from the OS, just not firmware updates.

Should either of you wish to discuss further, please feel free to contact me directly.

thanks,

Doug
