0GC375 Motherboard - Latest supported CPU? (XPS 600)

Thank you for the quick reply SpeedStep! I was just wondering where you got the information for this? I had a look at the user manual / service booklet but they made no mention of it.

Slightly disappointing if these three are indeed the best of the bunch, I can't find them on benchmark charts but they seem to be ca 2005 also!

Hi all, I have a rather-aged-but-still-very-functional XPS 600 with a 0GC375 motherboard. I was intending to upgrade the installed CPU, an Intel Pentium 4 640 (Prescott) with a later replacement. The socket is LGA 775, which seems to have been used as late as 2008 (Yorkfield). This could be a Core2Quad; not quite an i7 but a decent upgrade. My question is, given CPU support is also dependent on the motherboard, what is the latest/greatest CPU I could install in this workhorse of a machine? Incidentally, I also intend to expand the installed memory to 8GB, which from searching around *seems* to be the motherboard limit; though if anyone can attest otherwise I'm all ears. Thanks in advance!

bertiebaggio   The XPS 600 does not support any Core 2 Duo, or Core 2 Quad processors, only P4 and Pentium D processors.   The motherboard having a socket LGA 775 does not mean it will support any core 2 Duo, or Core 2 Quad processors, plus the XPS 600 is probably not worth the effort/cost of upgrading as the motherboard will not work above it's 800 FSB speed limit.     Bev.

Hey Bev, thanks for the reply- I figured this might be the case but thought it worth asking as some of the older Core* CPUs can be bought for less than a price of a couple of cinema tickets these days! At that price it would be silly not to upgrade had the option existed.

I didn't intend to cast doubt on SpeedStep's response, just wondered where they (and you) got the info from- it's always useful to know where folk get their answers! :) In fact when searching for the motherboards memory limit some of the posts out there claim 8GB as I mentioned, and some claim it is capable of 8 but limited to 2GB, for example. It's very easy for anyone to claim anything!

Unfortunately due to circumstance I'm stuck with what I have and as such a new motherboard/case/etc isn't possible right now; but the XPS 600 has done sterling work and doesn't owe me anything! :D

That was the conclusion I came to! Hopefully even 32bit Windows can address more than 2GB with PAE enabled, but we'll see.

It can vary, usually 3±gb is all a 32-bit system can address.

Well my Dell XPS 600 with this Motherboard has 2x2gb DDR2 PC2-6400 and 2x512mb DDR2 PC2-4300 chips for 5GB total and was running Win XP 32bit OS.
