24 GB Memory working in Studio XPS 435MT for $270
After trying 4 GiB DDR3 memory from G.Skill, Crucial and 2 sets of Black Diamond - and getting the dreaded "beep-beep" memory POST failure whenever I put more than 1 DIMM in a channel - I found memory that is recognized by the BIOS at the full 24 GiB.
I've been running with it for two weeks without a problem. I've run memtest, and even have pushed it into heavy paging running some database tests in virtual machines. (I have a fast OCZ Vertex 2 for pagefile.sys, so it can hard fault at an astonishing rate.)
Although this screen says 1333MHz, the OS and other tools say 1066MHz.
The DIMMs are Kingston KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX
Normally $120 per pair at http://www.frys.com/product/6516823?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG, but on sale in the Fry's stores for $89.99 per pair. (Note that the page says that they are 1.65v, but that's for 1600 MHz. The default is 1.5v at 1333MHz - look at the CPU-Z info below.)

I agree. Something seems amiss. The tri-channel RAM now allows mismatched modules & we now we're up to 48GB. The 435T should not be confused with the 435MT. They are not the same.
The XPS 435MT is still my desktop & just installed WinX. Very pleased with this PC. Upgraded to SSD couple years back. Why in the world anyone needs more than 24GB RAM ? But hey there's always more to learn. Most unfortunate that Dell won't allow us to clock this machine to 1333MHz.

Overclocking: Has anyone gotten the Intel XTU (current or old versions - 2.1?) to software overclock (not BIOS) either the 435MT or 435T/9000?

Sorry for the confusion, I updated my post to reflect fact that this was with a 435T/9000, not a 435MT. But, since they're both X58 based motherboards / i7-920 based systems that were released by Dell about the same time and 8GB sticks have been reported to work with the 435MT, the (right now) cheaper (and faster CL speed) Crucial Ballistix Sport should also work with the 435MT.
Timings on the Crucial Ballistix Sport at 1066 are a very good CL6-6-6-18 on my 435T/9000.
Another family member has the 435MT. Unfortunately, they live too far away for me to test the Crucials in it. It should work since it doesn't have the max 8/16GB Windows memory limitation, since I upgraded it to Windows 10 Home.

Ahh ,, thank you,,, I new it had to be the OS, lol,,,
I have the 435T/ 9000 as well, with the 920...
I might have some fun with it, been out of warranty for a while now, and also have another system w/ 32 GB..

FYI, Kingston HyperX and Crucial Ballistix Sport memory seem to have better "non-standard" JEDEC timings (I believe 435's read/use the memory's JEDEC settings), making them good for BIOS that can't be overclocked. Most other memory has standard JEDEC timings and put any better timings in XMP (which I think 435's ignore). At least that's my understanding.
Timings for Crucial Ballistix Sport in my 435T/9000 posted here.

I found some cheap 4GB DDR3 RAM [http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DUGDL1G] I'm considering using, but the only potential problem is that it's ECC. The CPU-Z DMI info shows:
DMI Memory Controller
correction 64-bit ECC
Max module size 2048 MBytes
So it seems like it might work, but I'm not sure since it also says the max module size is 2048.
Any ideas?
Edit: looks like the memory controller is on die and the i7 doesn't support it. CPU-Z lies. Anyway, I ended up getting 3 of these [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148719] instead. 24GB for a bit under $100 shipped....not a crazy deal like above, but not too shabby.

I assume you have already Googled DELL XPS STUDIO 435 MT INTEL CORE I7 MOTHERBOARD 0R849J & see some pretty astronomical prices.
I picked a MB up on eBay about 2 1/2 years ago for $70 but don't see any out there that cheap right now. I do see on eBay an entire XPS MT for $110. Includes MB, Processor, GTX 550 TI & 15GB RAM. Might be easier & cheaper than trying to track down remanufactured MB for under $200.
http://www.ebay.com/bhp/dell-studio-xps-435mt
I would contact the seller & inquire as to the revision number on the MB, make sure it's A01. The latest I believe.

1.1.4 is the BIOS update & if your board doesn't have the newest BIOS update (1.1.4) the yes you will want to update that. By the way you will need to run the BIOS update in Vista Compatibility mode, or @ least I did.
When I say revision number I am referring to the A00 after model number in your CPUZ picture. It would be even better if you purchased a MB with revision number A01. That would be the last. Mine is revision A01.

Yeah I don't remember doing any of that. Been two & half years but all I remember doing is downloading the BIOS file & executing (or extracting). The S435-114 (Foxconn Tech) pgm it places on your drive you would right-click & select Compatibility tab & Run the Program in Windows Vista mode.
If you run it Win 7 mode pretty sure it will be unsuccessful.
Maybe someone else here more recent experience.
See if the BIOS update gets you what is needed.

Feel like I gave a muddled & didn't even really answer your question. Have been trying to determine what facet of the MB's hardware functionality was improved from revision A00 to A01. Getting nowhere.
Wish some of the posters had listed their MB's Revision number. Maybe one of them with revision number A00 will come along & confirm they are indeed running 24 GB RAM.
Honestly since the MB you have is working not really sure the benefit gained would be worth the expense of buying another.
