Adding DIMMs to Inspiron 620
I have an Inspiron 620 with 2 2GB DIMMs. 4GB of ram is too little now. To upgrade to 8GB, do I need to replace the DIMMs with 4GB Dimms? That is, are there only two slots? (I've never opened the thing up.)
Thanks.

Yes, providing the memory is compatible with the Inspiron 620.

Best to go to Kingston's website and use their Memory Selector Here:

Granny2050,
Below are the memory configurations for the Inspiron 620.
Memory module connectors Two SODIMM connectors
Memory module capacities 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, 6GB, 8GB
Memory type 1333 MHz SoDIMM DDR3
Minimum memory 1 GB
Maximum memory 8 GB
The Inspiron™ 620 / 620s system uses 1333 MHz DDR3 unbuffered SDRAM. DDR3 SDRAM or double-data-rate three synchronous dynamic random access memory is a random access memory technology. It is a part of the SDRAM family of technologies, which is one of many DRAM (dynamic random access memory) implementations, and is an evolutionary improvement over its predecessor, DDR2 SDRAM.
Memory Configuration
DIMM 1 DIMM 2 Total Memory
1 GB 1 GB 2 GB
1 GB 2 GB 3 GB
2 GB 2 GB 4 GB
4 GB 2 GB 6 GB
4 GB 4 GB 8 GB

An additional question: it's been a LOONG while since I last added a RAM chip to a computer. Once i remove the old DIMMs and add the new ones and power the machine back on, will it automatically detect the change in RAM, or do I have to go into that Settings screen?

Don't know, I always use either Crucial's Memory Selector, or Newegg's Memory Finder, Here:
http://www.newegg.com/MemoryFinder/
Because then, the memory will be guaranteed compatible.
A hint, before buying any memory, always find out the seller's return policies.

Sorry to ask yet another question: I'm looking on Amazon for 1333 MHz DDR3 unbuffered SDRAM. Will any brand do? Do they all work with Inspiron 620?

somehow this may have gotten lost. On BHPhotoVideo's site there are two DIMMs in the category suitable for an Inspiron 620:
www.bhphotovideo.com/.../kingston_kvr13n9s8h_4_valueram_series_4gb_pc3_10600.html
and
www.bhphotovideo.com/.../kingston_kvr13s9s8_4_valueram_series_4gb_pc3_10600.html
They differ by a letter: n vs s. But they look quite different, one is much larger than the other, at least in the photograph. Do you know which one works with the Inspiron 620?
Thanks.

The Kingston 4GB ValueRAM DDR3 1333 MHz SO-DIMM Memory Module, shown here:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1220286-REG/kingston_kvr13s9s8_4_valueram_series_4gb_pc3_10600.html
This is primarily for Laptop computers and not compatible with the Inspiron 620.
Regards to Kingston 4GB ValueRAM DDR3 1333 MHz DIMM Memory Module, this should be compatble, but sometimes there are issues using KVR memory with Dell computers.

The merry-go-round continues. I did get the 4GB DIMMs but when I got home (and only then) I found out they were for laptops. The DIMMs currently installed are 1333MHz. But there's this one
Crucial 4GB DDR3L-1600 UDIMM
Is it OK to install a 1600 where a 1333 was formerly?
I'm not even sure there are Crucials for the desktop at 1333.
