Are there step by step instructions for replacing CMOS battery?

Obviously information will be lost. What needs to be done, and how to do it, to back up and restore setting when replacing the battery?

Thank you Bev.  It is a Dell dimension 8300 message comes up when the computer reboots. I have read that some have flashed the bios but I am  looking for instructions to find out how to complete the whole battery replacement process.

There is a free service manual available for download in HTML or Adobe PDF format http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8300/en/index.htm

If I remember right there is a tab on the side of the battery compartment and simply pulling it gently releases the battery and inserting a new one locks it in place. you generally have about 10 minutes to replace it w/o losing the clock. If you don't know what it is you can remove, read the numbers, replace it and go buy one. Remember to power down the PC, pull the power to the PC and touch something metal to dissipate any static you may have in your body then remove/insert the battery. Good Luck.

Here is the Dell guide :     http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8300/sm/battery.htm

Buy a premium quality battery as it will last a lot longer than those cheap ones and less chance of CMOS damage in the long run.
