Bigger PSU for Dell Optiplex 7040MT-please help out

Hello All,

I recently bought a dell optiplex 7040 mini tower and it came with 240 watt supply. I will like to upgrade it and will like to know what are my options.

Thanks

The 7040 might use the same wacky scheme that the Precision T1700 uses.  If thats the case MODDIY has an adapter to convert the 24 pin into an 8 pin connector. Suitable for Dell OptiPlex 3020 / 7020 / 9020 / T1700 so I'm guessing that the 7040 is the same.

Unfortunately you don't have any options. :emotion-6: The OptiPlex 7040 doesn't use a standard ATX power supply. The 240 Watt is perfectly adequate for your current specs. Why were you wanting to upgrade?

You will need to look for a Low Profile adapter card that doesn't use any supplementary power connectors. The GT970 uses 2x6 pin power connectors. The x16 PCIe slot provides up to 75W on it own.

This will limit your choices quite a bit. You can use a Power Supply Calculator to make sure that your system will provide enough power.

For EXAMPLE here's AMD Radeon 270 that even though it recommends a 400W power supply consumes only 47W and does not require any supplementary power connectors. I plugged your basic specs into the power supply calculator and it showed that the system would be using 191W and recommended a 241W power supply.

I bought one and tried it on my 7040, no luck.  They specifically say it only works with the 7020 :(

Actually, after I put the case together it worked.  Apparently the front case has to be closed for the power button to be pressed.  So the cable works on a 7040.

It would be helpful to know the power supply used as well as pictures of the mod.  Some people are not believing that it works.
