Bluetooth problem ? Dimension E521

When I let my wireless keyboard or mouse idle for five minutes or so neither will respond when I try to use them.  Currently I take the receiver out of the usb port on the front and put it in the unused one next to it.  Any help to why this is would be appreciated, batteries are new.
