CPU Upgrade in Dell Dimension E520

I have just purchased a second hand Dell Dimension E520 and firstly I would like to state how well made these things are. I'm over the moon with it.

The configuration that I bought has got an Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz Processor in it and the motherboard has a model number of 'E210882' and is a SKT775.

I have looked around the net and there seems to be a few configurations around, including some with Core 2 Duo processors. Will a Core 2 Duo work in mine or are they difference motherboards? Also, what is the maximum amount of Ram the motherboard will take?

Thanks in advance

Yes, the e520 supports Core 2 Duo processors.

Reading the discussions HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> and HERE should help with upgrading the e520 processor.

Only 65 nm processors with 800 or 1066 mhz FSB will work with the E-520.

Before installing the processor, check that you have BIOS version 2.2.1 [or higher], when additional CPU support was added.

The e520 supports a maximum of 4gb of memory [4 x 1gb modules].

Note:  When you have a 32-bit system, it does not recognize 4gb of memory, 3gb± is all a 32bit system can address.

The Dimension e520 Specifications are HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Thanks for your response Bev. I'm glad to see the system will take an E6600 (and some even suggest it will take a Q6600 but as this is only a work machine, E6600 will be fine. Yeah, I know about the Ram limits. May upgrade it to 2GB for now and see what happens further down the line.

Thanks again.

Ok, I've got my Dell Dimension E520 now and I'd like to try and upgrade the CPU (although may wait til after Christmas). If I decide to buy an E6600 or even try my Q6600, would I need to replace the Heatsink/Fan or would the standard Dell one be sufficient?

Thanks

I haven't tried anything yet. My main PC has an Intel Q6600 in it so I am going to try it with that at the weekend. If that doesn't work, I'll be buying an Intel E6600 for it. I find the PentiumD a bit too slow after a Core2Quad :)

I have put an Intel Q6600 in my Dell Dimension E520 PC but now every time I turn it on, it comes up with a message saying the installed processor is not supported, press F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup - if I press F1, the system continues to boot fine and runs really well.

Is there any way to prevent this error from coming up?

Before installing the processor, did you upgrade the BIOS to the latest version 2.4.0, because BIOS version 2.2.1, had additional CPU support added?

That's great, happy to hear that upgrading the BIOS fixed the problem.
