Can APPCRASH, Faults, Blue Screens, etc be caused solely by Increasing RAM in Inspiron 580 or by something inherent in WINDOWS 7

On 7/30/11 I Increased RAM from GB (2+2+2+0) to 10 GB (2+2+2+4) on my 64-bit Inspiron 580 PC that has run perfectly since I purchased it 4 months ago.  Shortly after that my PC has experienced a series of appl faults, crashes and Blue Screens..the most serious are Unexpected Windows 7  and Windows Explorer shutdowns. It would also crash if I tried to open a disabled program like Digital Adobe Reader.

When i removed the 4GB RAM the crashes stopped.  Next I configured my RAM from 6G to 8GB  ((2+2+2+0) to 8 GB (2+2+4+0.See 8G Conf below ) The Blue screens and crashes resumed.  Again I removed the 4G RAM Card and went back to the normal 6G RAM.  Guess what the Crashes and Blue Screens stopped!!  talked to 3 Dell tech service staff 3 separate times. One said 8G RAM was the max, one said 16, another said 8G was max. Either way I can't seem to safely increase the RAM.  I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S THE DELL PC OR SOMETHING INHERENT IN WINDOWS 7 THAT'S CAUSING THIS.   I would like some help/advice.

PS...I chose the 4G RAM Chip carefully to have the same spec as the OEM RAM Chips. See 8G Conf below that causes Blue screens (appl crashes in Windows7) When the 4G Corsair card is removed and original Samsung 2G RAM replaced...no adverse events occur.

Warren54,

The Inspiron 580 supports a total of 8Gb of RAM.  See this:  support.dell.com/.../cs_en.pdf

While the above specs say that you can use 4Gb chips, the chip sources I use recommend maxing out the 580's memory capability with 2Gb chips.  Have you tried the chips in a 4+0+2+2 configuration?   Have you tried using only the 4Gb chip in the first slot with no chips in the other slots?  Also, do you have the latest BIOS?  See this:  support.dell.com/.../download.aspx

Hope this information helps.

Tony

Looked both of these up. They timmings do not match between them. The Samsung is 9-9-9-25, the Corsair are 9-9-9-24. Usually run all the same manufacture, and size of memory in a Dell computer. Over the years have found that Dell systems are "pickey" when it comes to memory. The exception is the X58 chipset. Myself I would try to find 2 more sticks of the 2GB Samsung memory, or contact Crucial .com for a complete new set of 2GB x 4 from them. They promise it will run in your computer. Bought quite a bit of memory from them. Very nice people. Hope it helps.

Based on the advice on the thead about the possibly bad 580 motherboards I cited above, I replaced my 3 sticks of Dell supplied 2 GB modules with 2 sticks of non-Dell 4 GB, in the "good" slots DIMM3 and DIMM4, avoiding the "bad" slots DIMM1  and DIMM2 yesterday, and the system seems to be running more stable.

If people have the suspected "bad" motherboard witht the suspected bad slots, trying to use 4 x 2 GB to get to 8 GB won't work.

(I'm still waiting for an answer to my question in that thread if they ahve a fix other than replacing the motherboard.)

Thanks to DELL-Chris M, Dell swapped out the Kingston memory that came with my 580 with hynix (Hyundai) RAM and now my system is stable. It may be that they shipped systems with not quite-so-compatible RAM, given the reputation I learned on this forum about Dell systems being finicky about RAM.

I'm running 16 GB, with the Dell-provided hynix RAM in DIMM1 and DIMM2, with the G.Skill RAM I bought in DIMM3 and DIMM4, running as Dual Channel, Symmetric.
