Can I add Radeon 2400 to Dimension 3100?

I have a Dimension 3100 with XP, maximum RAM and have upgraded the power supply to 350W.

Can the system handle the Diamond Radeon 2400 256MB graphics card and will there be much difference than the on-board Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset?

The system is limited of course and the only available slot is PCI. (plus PCIx16)

Had a GeForce 5200 installed but the fan has died and looking for replacement.

Thanks,

Robin

The 2400 will work, but it's a weak card. I'd recommend at least a 4550. Use a passively cooled one and you won't have to worry about failing fans again.

Either will be a significant improvement over the onboard graphics.

The 3100 doesn't have a PCIx16 slot ... i wouldn't go crazy with a video upgrade ... pci slot video cards aren't much faster than onboard ... do a ATI 2400 like you said or a Nvidia 8400 ... don't spend much money.

Those old Pentium 4 CPUs aren't very powerful ... upgrading video will just give you a tiny boost.

I'm am comfortable tearing apart computers  ... i'd do a motherboard/cpu upgrade before a pci video card upgrade ... but on the flip side of that if you spend $200 doing something like that you might as well pull a $200 system out of the dell outlet ...

There are sites claiming to have hacks regarding x16 to x1.   Never used them.
