Can't switch on - amber flashing light

Some days when I try to switch on my Dimension 5000 the power switch light starts flashing amber but nothing else happens. If I switch off and try again , same thing happens. But if I leave it for 30 minutes it boots up normally ( so far).

Support don't seem to have any ideas on what causes this. Has anyone else had the problem?

From your manual ( http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5000/en/sm/adtshoot.htm#wp1114432 ) :

"

Blinking yellow:

A power supply or system board failure has occurred.

Check the diagnostic lights to see if the specific problem is identified. Also, see "Power Problems."

"

As suggested above, what do the diagnostic lights on your system indicate when this issue occurs?

It sounds like a flaky PSU.  Sometimes they just "sortof" work.  I've seen that several times and that makes it hard to figure out.  If you have a spare PSU lying around, I would try that.

You might also try reseating everything plugged into the PSU and the motherboard.

Then probably 'flakey' power supply as mentioned by peter.
